AeroVironment Completes Strategic Acquisition of Empirical Systems Aerospace

AeroVironment buys Empirical Systems Aerospace for $200M, using stock and cash, to accelerate loitering munition production and enhance propulsion tech.

In a move to bolster its technological capabilities, defense contractor AeroVironment has finalized the acquisition of Empirical Systems Aerospace. The transaction, completed on March 16, 2026, sees the drone manufacturer absorbing the California-based engineering firm, which specializes in unmanned aerial systems and advanced propulsion technologies.

Financial Structure and Strategic Integration

The deal carries a total price tag of approximately $200 million. AeroVironment financed the majority of this sum—about $160 million—through the issuance of 671,078 new shares. The remaining balance was settled in cash.

Empirical Systems Aerospace will now operate as a subsidiary within AeroVironment’s Precision Strike and Defense Systems division. Its operations will report directly to the segment focused on loitering munition systems, indicating a targeted integration to enhance this specific product line.

Accelerating Production and Market Position

The acquisition is fundamentally driven by the target company's expertise. Empirical Systems Aerospace brings valuable experience in electric and hybrid propulsion systems, rapid prototyping, and certified manufacturing processes. AeroVironment anticipates that these capabilities will significantly shorten the development timeline, accelerating the shift from initial concept to full-scale serial production.

From a financial perspective, management expects the integration to make a positive contribution to adjusted EBITDA within the first full year following the deal's closure. This purchase represents a continuation of an aggressive growth strategy for AeroVironment. It follows the company's much larger $4.1 billion acquisition of BlueHalo the previous year, a major step in the ongoing consolidation of the defense technology sector.

Despite these strategic expansions, AeroVironment's equity faces notable headwinds. The stock is currently trading at 184.20 euros, a level that places it roughly 48% below its 52-week high of 354.30 euros, which was recorded as recently as October 2025.
