The iShares MSCI World ETF (URTH) is navigating a significant fortnight, with two distinct events poised to reshape its underlying portfolio. While a Federal Reserve meeting on March 17-18 presents an immediate market test, a more fundamental shift is scheduled for May 2026, when MSCI will implement a sweeping overhaul of its core index methodology.

The Immediate Catalyst: Federal Reserve Policy

Given that U.S. equities continue to dominate the ETF's holdings, constituting over 70% of its assets, the Fed's upcoming interest rate decision is the most pressing short-term driver. The central bank's dilemma—whether to proceed with anticipated rate cuts or pause in response to recent oil price volatility—carries substantial weight for a fund with such pronounced exposure to American markets.

A Subtle Shift in U.S. Exposure

A recent rebalancing on March 2 revealed a notable, if measured, adjustment. Within its U.S. segment, the fund removed 15 holdings while adding only 8, marking the first net reduction in U.S. weighting in several years. The new additions, including AST SpaceMobile, Coherent Corp, and FTAI Aviation, reflect emerging themes in AI hardware and satellite communications. Conversely, the French payment services firm Edenred was among those removed from the index.

Despite these changes, the fund's core characteristics remain intact. Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft retain their top positions, and the technology sector maintains its leading share at nearly 28% of the portfolio.

The Forthcoming Methodology Overhaul

Industry observers note that the March rebalancing was deliberately conservative. The reason lies ahead: in May 2026, MSCI will enact fundamental revisions to its calculations for free-float adjustments and rounding conventions. While technical, these changes will have tangible effects. Modified rounding rules can alter the eligible free-float percentage of individual mega-cap stocks, thereby recalibrating their index weight. Analysts anticipate that the May revision will trigger considerably more portfolio turnover than the gentle adjustments seen in March.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MSCI World ETF?

In a related development, a proposed rule that would have excluded companies holding more than 50% of their balance sheet in cryptocurrencies from the index was ultimately discarded. This decision removes a potential source of passive selling pressure on any such holdings.

A Confluence of Influences

As the Fed deliberates and the May methodology change looms, the URTH ETF faces two concrete stress tests. The outcomes of these events are expected to exert a greater influence on the fund's composition than any standard quarterly rebalancing in recent memory, setting the stage for a potentially transformative period.
