The iShares Core MSCI World ETF is set for major changes from a May index methodology overhaul and the potential trillion-dollar SpaceX IPO, reshaping its portfolio and driving significant rebalancing flows.

The iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF (Acc) is approaching a period of significant potential transformation, driven by two major events that could reshape its portfolio more profoundly than any routine rebalancing. These are a foundational shift in the underlying index methodology scheduled for May and the prospective market debut of SpaceX, which could enter public markets with a trillion-dollar valuation.

The Immediate Rebalancing Landscape

The fund's most recent quarterly rebalancing at the start of 2026 revealed notable strategic moves. A net reduction in US equity exposure was executed, marking the first such decrease in several years. This shift was accompanied by the addition of 18 new holdings and the removal of 27 others, pointing to a deliberate portfolio rotation.

New additions like AST SpaceMobile, Coherent Corp, and FTAI Aviation suggest a targeted approach toward companies linked to AI hardware infrastructure and space-based communications. In Europe, the exclusion of the French payments specialist Edenred was a standout change. Despite the net pullback, US stocks continue to command a dominant share of the fund, maintaining a weighting above 70%.

This rebalancing occurs against a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. The US Federal Reserve has held its key interest rate steady in the 3.5% to 3.75% corridor for a second consecutive meeting, while also raising its core inflation forecast for the end of 2026 to 2.7%. Futures markets currently price in no further rate cuts for 2026, creating a headwind for the technology sector—the ETF's largest single segment with an approximate 26% weighting.

Upcoming Structural Shifts: Methodology and a Mega-Listing

The more substantial structural test arrives in May. Index provider MSCI is set to implement one of the most significant methodological reforms in the history of the MSCI World Index. The overhaul will fundamentally revise how free-float shares are calculated, introducing three new categories for determining a company's freely tradable portion. This change is likely to materially alter the index weights of certain mega-cap constituents and could trigger a portfolio turnover rate significantly higher than that of a standard quarterly review.

Coinciding with this reform is the potential for a seismic market event: the initial public offering (IPO) of SpaceX. Reports indicate Elon Musk's aerospace company could imminently file for a public listing, targeting an issuance exceeding $75 billion and an expected valuation in the trillion-dollar range. Inclusion in the MSCI World Index would substantially recalibrate its composition. Should the methodological reform and SpaceX's inclusion converge, the associated rebalancing flows for funds tracking the index could reach into the billions of dollars.
