A $14 Million Gamble Casts a Shadow on Micron's Unstoppable AI Surge

Micron stock soars 518% on AI memory demand, but a $14M options bet and insider selling signal growing market skepticism ahead of earnings.

The memory chip sector is experiencing a boom of historic proportions, and Micron Technology stands squarely at its epicenter. With its stock up an astonishing 518% over the past year and trading near €380, the company is reaping the rewards of an insatiable AI-driven demand for high-performance memory. Yet, beneath this story of operational dominance, a significant and costly bet is being placed against its continued ascent.

A single options trader recently made a bold contrarian move, purchasing 1,870 put options with a $420 strike price expiring in December 2026. The premium paid for this position, which profits from a significant decline in Micron's share price, exceeded $14 million. This substantial wager underscores a growing undercurrent of market skepticism that contrasts sharply with the company's stellar fundamentals.

Those fundamentals, however, are virtually unparalleled. Micron has sold out its entire production capacity of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for the 2026 calendar year, granting it exceptional pricing power and visibility. This strength is reflected in soaring contract prices; research firm TrendForce reports DRAM prices surged over 90% in the first quarter, with a further 60% jump anticipated for Q2. For NAND flash memory, price acceleration is even more pronounced, exceeding 70%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

Financially, this translates into record-breaking performance. The company posted revenue of nearly $24 billion last quarter, with its gross margin expanding dramatically. Looking ahead, management has provided guidance for the current quarter projecting revenue of approximately $33.5 billion and a gross margin reaching a staggering 81%. Analysts, including those at KeyBanc who list Micron as a top pick alongside Nvidia and Intel, foresee a broad semiconductor recovery fueled by massive AI infrastructure investment.

Despite this powerful narrative, warning signs are accumulating. The broader options market shows increased hedging activity, with a put/call ratio of 0.84 compared to a typical level around 0.7. More notably, corporate insiders have been capitalizing on the rally. Over the past three months, executives sold shares worth $53.1 million without making a single purchase. A notable transaction involved board member Sumit Sadana, who disposed of 24,000 shares in mid-April.

This insider activity has coincided with a more cautious stance from some analysts. Erste Group recently downgraded the stock to "Hold," expressing concern that massive capital expenditures could pressure free cash flow. The central debate now raging among investors is whether Micron is benefiting from a permanent structural shift due to AI or is merely riding a cyclical peak. The stock's high annualized volatility, above 70%, mirrors this investor anxiety.

The coming weeks will be critical for resolving this tension. Micron is scheduled to report its current quarter results in late June, providing concrete evidence on whether its extreme pricing power remains intact with customers. While the fundamental backdrop, supported by forecasts of a 33% rise in cloud investments for 2026, appears robust, the $14 million bet and insider sales serve as a stark reminder that even the most powerful rallies eventually face a test of conviction.
