Certification for battery inverter platform
SMA Solar Technology AG announced on September 28, 2026, that it had received the first certification under the VDE FNN technical guidance for grid-forming properties, including the provision of instantaneous reserve. The company release said the certification applies to the Sunny Central Storage UP-S battery inverter platform and confirms compliance with version 2.1 of the VDE FNN guidance. The guidance sets technical requirements and verification procedures for grid-forming units and facilities seeking to participate in Germany's market for instantaneous reserve.
SMA said the certification creates a standardized route for testing, verification and certification of grid-forming technologies. The company also cited prior use of its technology in the Blackhillock and Kilmarnock projects in the United Kingdom and the Föhren battery-storage project in Germany.
