Bell Bay Aluminium secured through 2031
In a company release dated October 1, 2026, Rio Tinto said it had reached an agreement with the Tasmanian and Australian governments to secure the ongoing operation of Bell Bay Aluminium in northern Tasmania through the end of 2031. Hydro Tasmania will continue supplying electricity to the smelter until December 31, 2031, while government support is intended to help maintain its competitiveness as Tasmania’s energy system evolves.
Rio Tinto said Bell Bay Aluminium is fully owned by the company and produces about 190,000 tonnes of aluminum annually. The smelter began operating in 1955 and supports about 550 full-time employees, according to the release.
