In a September 10, 2026 release, Rio Tinto said the Nyangumarta Warrarn Aboriginal Corporation and Rio Tinto had signed a project agreement for the proposed Winu copper-gold mine in Western Australia. The company said the project remained subject to regulatory and other required approvals and a final investment decision. Rio Tinto said it would develop and operate Winu and holds a 70 percent interest, while Sumitomo Metal Mining holds 30 percent.
Carbon-capture trial
In a September 28, 2026 release, Rio Tinto said it and Shougang Group had commissioned an industrial-scale carbon-capture trial facility in China. The facility is designed to process up to 3,000 cubic meters of blast-furnace gas per hour and capture up to 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
