Ventilus project faces permit setback
The Brussels Times reported that the Flemish Permit Disputes Council suspended an environmental license for part of Elia’s 82-kilometer Ventilus high-voltage line project in West Flanders. The decision concerns the expansion of the Gezelle high-voltage substation in Bruges.
Elia said it had taken note of the ruling, according to the report. The grid operator said most work at the Gezelle substation would be halted, while work covered by a separate permit could continue. Elia also said it was too early to determine the impact on the timetable for the wider Ventilus project and that it would examine the exact scope of the decision.
Project background
The Ventilus project is a planned high-voltage line between Zeebrugge and Avelgem. The report said the latest decision followed legal challenges from associations, local residents and municipalities along the route. A previous permit covering works in Izegem had also been suspended, while several other appeals had been rejected.
