Settlement Sets The Morning Agenda
3M said in a Nov. 3 press release that it had reached a broad resolution covering PFAS-related personal injury claims in the AFFF multi-district litigation. The agreement carries a nominal pre-tax commitment of USD 7.35 billion through 2034 and a present value of USD 5.8 billion. It covers about 99 percent of current personal injury claims and involves an estimated 115,000 to 120,000 eligible plaintiffs.
3M said it will record the USD 5.8 billion present-value amount as a pre-tax charge in the fourth quarter of 2026. The charge will be treated as a special item in adjusted results and does not change the company's previously issued 2026 guidance. The payment schedule includes USD 50 million in 2026, no payments in 2027 and about 20 percent of payments in the final two years.
The company scheduled an investor teleconference for 8:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, November 4. For investors, the settlement reduces uncertainty around a major legacy liability, while the special item will weigh on reported fourth-quarter earnings without changing the stated adjusted outlook.
The S&P 500 is the relevant US market benchmark for 3M investors.
