Zenith Becomes Arnault's Ultra-Luxury Laboratory as LVMH Confronts a 40% Slide

Jean Arnault uses Zenith to test a top-end strategy as LVMH shares drop 40% this year and the Dior holding overhaul heads to a December vote.

Jean Arnault has turned to the group's smallest watch brand to test a bigger idea. Since taking charge of LVMH's watch division — TAG Heuer excepted — in spring 2026, Bernard Arnault's son has been steering a strategic overhaul aimed squarely at the top end of the market. Zenith, the diminutive traditional house inside the conglomerate, serves as the proving ground. The playbook leans on deliberate scarcity, tightening supply to sharpen the brand's standing among luxury watch buyers.

That repositioning unfolds against a far less forgiving backdrop. After years of aggressive price increases, shifting consumer tastes and stubborn inflation have sapped demand, with the core fashion and leather goods division showing the strain most clearly.

A Holding Structure in Motion

While the product strategy takes shape, the family is redrawing the map above LVMH itself. Christian Dior has announced a reorganization of the holding layers sitting atop the group, under which the stakes would be bundled into a renamed entity, Agache. The new vehicle would hold 49.76% of LVMH's capital and 65.55% of its voting rights. Shareholders are scheduled to vote on the plan in December 2026.

Brand-level appointments are moving in parallel. Clara Boissonnas, an executive at Louis Vuitton, will take over as head of the fashion house Pucci on January 1, 2027, succeeding Saar Debrouwere.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying LVMH?

Further out on the horizon, the fate of Giorgio Armani's empire is coming into focus. A year after the designer's death in September 2025, pivotal talks over the future ownership structure have begun. LVMH, L'Oréal and EssilorLuxottica were originally slated to each take 5% of the capital, though media reports suggest alternative models are now surfacing at the negotiating table.

Closer to home, the redevelopment of Louis Vuitton's flagship on the Champs-Élysées carries legal and tax risks flagged by the group's own lawyers and tax specialists. Bernard Arnault must decide soon how to proceed.

Analysts Split on the Timing of a Turnaround

The sell-side is not uniformly gloomy. UBS reaffirmed its buy rating yesterday while cutting its price target to EUR 525 from EUR 645. Goldman Sachs reportedly initiated coverage yesterday with a buy recommendation and a EUR 500 target, pointing to an expected return to growth in European luxury and a possible revival in fashion in 2027. The US bank projects organic growth in the mid-single-digit percentage range for the sector through 2027.

Investors, though, remain unconvinced. The shares changed hands at EUR 383.30 today, a modest 0.3% decline, and have lost 40% since the start of the year. At EUR 384.65 in earlier trading, the stock sat just 2.1% above its 52-week low.

LVMH at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Reuters Breakingviews notes that both the company's valuation and analyst earnings estimates have come down, while a demand recovery stays uncertain. What market participants now want to know is when the measures already set in motion will begin to bite — and whether the trough in demand has already been passed.

Rounding out a busy corporate calendar, LVMH notified the French financial regulator AMF of transactions in its own shares between September 21 and 25, 2026, and will open 71 sites across 13 countries to visitors from October 16 to 18, 2026, for the Journées des Métiers d'Art.
