Ergonomics advisers say a physical barrier between desk and bed, correct screen distance and regular position shifts help protect health while working from home.

Working from a corner of the bedroom has become normal for plenty of people, but ergonomics advisers keep returning to one stubborn problem: when the desk never leaves your field of view, neither does the job. The fix starts with a physical barrier — a shelf, a folding screen, a curtain — anything that keeps the workstation out of sight from the bed. That single change supports the mental split between work and rest, and a brief tidy-up ritual at the end of the day reinforces it.

Space is tight in many homes, which makes the arrangement of equipment matter even more. Germany's Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) advises positioning the desk so that natural daylight falls on the screen from the side, which cuts down on glare.

Screen distance deserves just as much attention. Around 50 centimetres — roughly an arm's length — is the minimum for a neutral head position, and the top line of the display should sit just below eye level.

Anyone spending hours on a laptop should pair it with a separate keyboard and an external mouse. Wrists then stay straight rather than angled, heading off the strain that builds up over a long day.

Keep moving, keep shifting position

Sitting still for hours is its own hazard, and the countermeasure is variety. At a height-adjustable desk, the guidance is to alternate between sitting and standing at intervals of about 30 to 60 minutes.

When seated, both feet should rest flat on the floor with the knees bent at close to 90 degrees. Experts also suggest short movement breaks every 20 to 30 minutes — enough to loosen up muscles and give the eyes a rest from the display.

The other half of the equation: what happens at night

Recovery doesn't stop when the laptop closes. Ergonomically shaped neck pillows are designed to hold the head and neck so the spine stays as close to a straight line as possible. How high a pillow should be depends on neck length and sleeping position: side sleepers generally need a taller profile than those who sleep on their stomach or back.

Models filled with removable natural material, such as pine shavings, let users adjust the height gradually. With synthetic foams like memory foam, the sleeping climate becomes the deciding factor — open-cell foam structures, or covers made from functional fibres such as Tencel and Lyocell, help heat and moisture escape.

Care instructions come with a warning of their own: foam cores must never go into a washing machine, though removable covers can be washed separately. Advisers also stress that while an ergonomic pillow may help keep airways open, it is no substitute for medical treatment.
