XRP's September Crossroads: Fed Hawkishness Tests a Token With Record Institutional Backing

The digital asset market's recent turbulence has put XRP's resilience to the test, with the token slipping to $1.34 on Monday—a 4.3% decline on the day that underscores just how sensitive cryptocurrencies remain to shifts in monetary policy. The trigger came from Federal Reserve Chair Warsh, whose emphatic commitment to a 2% inflation target reshaped rate expectations almost overnight, lifting the probability of a September hike from 35% to 57% and sending ripples across the entire sector. Bitcoin slid below $78,000, while Ethereum and BNB also felt the squeeze.
Yet for all the near-term noise, the bigger picture tells a more nuanced story. August was XRP's strongest month since July 2025, with gains of roughly 31% still intact despite the recent pullback. The rally's engine was a dramatic surge from $0.988 to $1.698—a 71.8% advance—followed by a correction of about 20% that has now extended slightly further. The token's 30-day performance remains firmly positive at 26%, a reminder that the underlying momentum hasn't fully dissipated.
Technical Damage and a Key Support Zone
The current price action has, however, breached a level that technicians had been watching closely. Analyst Ali Martinez had flagged a substantial support zone between $1.35 and $1.38, where some 3.2 billion XRP tokens recently changed hands. With the price now trading below that band, the Fed-driven selling pressure has clearly dented the short-term technical structure. Martinez maintains that the confirmed breakout above a descending trendline keeps a target of $1.70 in play, with resistance levels at $1.60, $1.68, and $1.86. A decisive move through those barriers, he argues, could open the door to $2.19.
ETF Flows Tell a Different Story
While macro headwinds buffet the spot market, institutional appetite tells a contrasting tale. Spot XRP ETFs recorded inflows of $110.49 million in the week ending August 28—their strongest weekly showing since December 2025. August's cumulative inflows reached $153.54 million, pushing total net assets across the funds to $1.66 billion. Notably, the products haven't seen net outflows in three weeks.
Bitwise leads the pack with approximately $600 million in inflows, followed by Franklin Templeton's XRPZ product at over $462 million. A separate tally from the week ending August 30 puts Canary at $483 million and Franklin Templeton at roughly $463 million, with cumulative inflows hitting an all-time high of $1.66 billion—consistent figures across both datasets.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?
Ripple's Institutional Pivot Accelerates
Behind the scenes, Ripple is executing a strategic shift that extends well beyond the token's price action. CEO Brad Garlinghouse used the SALT Conference in Wyoming to project a more than doubling of 2026 revenue, underpinned by institutional partnerships with BlackRock and BNY Mellon centered on the RLUSD stablecoin. He also revealed that Ripple's infrastructure processed approximately $16 trillion in transaction volume over the past year.
The company's institutional focus is increasingly evident. Ripple Prime has launched a delta-one desk offering total-return swaps on equities, indices, and digital assets, targeting hedge funds and asset managers. The firm has also brought in Joseph Thompson, formerly treasury chief at the London Metal Exchange, to lead its tokenization strategy—a hire that brings over 15 years of experience in clearing, liquidity, and collateral management. Ripple currently employs around 1,500 people and has 150 open positions, with Garlinghouse pushing back on industry layoffs being attributed to AI, describing such firms as having been "bloated" beforehand.
Regulatory Clock Ticks Toward September 15
The immediate catalyst for XRP's next directional move may well come from Washington. The US Senate is scheduled to vote on the CLARITY Act on September 15, following the Banking Committee's 15-9 vote to advance the legislation. Ripple's chief legal officer, Stuart Alderoty, has tied the outcome to jobs and economic growth, citing industry research projecting roughly 232,000 US jobs from the crypto sector by 2026.
Adding to the September complexity is a scheduled unlock of one billion XRP from Ripple's escrow on September 1, valued at around $1 billion. Historical patterns suggest 600 to 800 million of those tokens will be immediately re-locked, leaving a net supply increase of 200 to 400 million XRP—a dilution that has typically had a modest impact in practice but always generates debate.
Beyond the Token: The Ledger's Quiet Evolution
Away from price charts, the XRP Ledger is maturing as a multi-asset platform. RLUSD, Ripple's stablecoin, has surpassed $1 billion in circulation on the ledger, with one validator operator describing the transformation as a "day-and-night difference" from two years ago. The ecosystem now hosts additional stablecoins including USDB from Braza Bank, EURCV from Société Générale, USDC from Circle, and EUROP from Schuman Financial—evidence that the infrastructure is increasingly standing on its own, independent of XRP's market performance.
For investors, September shapes up as a dual test: the Fed's policy decision and the Senate's CLARITY Act vote are poised to play decisive roles in determining XRP's near-term trajectory. Between hawkish monetary signals and accelerating institutional adoption, the token finds itself caught between two powerful forces pulling in opposite directions.
