XRP's Rally Hits a Coinbase Wall While Washington and Wall Street Circle Closer

The digital asset market has a habit of serving up contradictory narratives, and XRP is currently embodying that tension better than most. At roughly $1.48, the token finds itself squeezed between a formidable wall of sell orders on Coinbase and a steady drip of institutional capital that shows no signs of letting up.
The numbers tell a story of a market catching its breath after a ferocious sprint. XRP tumbled from a local peak of $1.70 to around $1.50 between August 22 and 25, with exchange data revealing concentrated selling pressure at the $1.70 and $2.00 levels. Buy orders, by contrast, have clustered just beneath $1.52. The token is down 2.5 percent on the day, yet those losses look modest against a 48 percent weekly gain and a 35 percent monthly advance. The pullback, in other words, is a pause in an otherwise powerful recovery rather than a reversal of it.
The Institutional Bid Keeps Building
Behind the price action, a quieter accumulation story is unfolding. The seven approved US spot ETFs tracking XRP recorded their sixth consecutive week of positive net inflows through August 22, totaling $39.78 million. Morgan Stanley disclosed fresh positions in spot XRP ETFs in a regulatory filing, following JPMorgan's own disclosure of institutional fund vehicle exposure in its mid-August quarterly report. The pattern is unmistakable: established financial houses are increasingly treating XRP as a standard portfolio holding, indifferent to the day-to-day noise at crypto exchanges.
Ripple's corporate machinery is also moving. Ripple Prime, the company's brokerage arm, closed an upsized $275 million bond issuance — unsecured senior notes tied to Ripple's corporate creditworthiness, which includes its XRP holdings. The proceeds are earmarked for expanding the brokerage business. Notably, the public documents do not show direct collateralization by XRP tokens themselves.
Washington's Shifting Sands
The regulatory climate has brightened considerably. The SEC's mid-August proposal of "Regulation Crypto Assets" offers a potential safe harbor, allowing tokens to shed their security classification once they hit certain development milestones. The agency explicitly cited the 2025 Ripple settlement as a precedent. Around the same time, CFTC chief Michael Selig signaled a departure from enforcement-driven regulation during a White House meeting on August 19 that included Ripple executives.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?
The political dimension grew more intriguing when Vice President J.D. Vance floated the idea of a sovereign wealth fund with a crypto reserve during a Newsmax appearance on August 22, explicitly naming XRP against the backdrop of $40 trillion in national debt. The CLARITY Act, which would establish market structure rules for digital currencies, has been pushed to September, still short of the ten Democratic votes needed in the Senate.
A Bridge Incident and an Escrow Overhang
Not everything is breaking XRP's way. Users reported an incident at a bridge on the XRP Ledger, with roughly 200,000 XRP drained in what appears to be an exploit. Details remain scarce, but for a network positioning itself as institutional-grade infrastructure, the reputational sting matters more than the dollar figure.
Supply-side dynamics add another layer of caution. 21Shares' analysis flags the ongoing escrow release mechanism, which dilutes XRP holdings by 5.5 percent annually. For network revenues to offset that supply pressure, they would need to grow by a factor of 12,700 — a sobering math problem that tempers the otherwise bullish narrative.
Overbought and Stretched
Technical indicators reinforce the caution. The relative strength index sits at 80.6 on one measure and 85.7 on another, both firmly in overbought territory. The token trades 16 percent above its 200-day moving average of $1.28 and 34 percent above its 50-day average of $1.11. Analysts point to resistance near $1.50, with support zones identified at $1.37 to $1.38 and, on lower timeframes, around $0.50.
The longer-term story remains compelling: Canary Capital CEO Steven McClurg argues XRP will win the race for institutional financial infrastructure, citing credit operations via Cicada Credit and Clearpool on the XRP Ledger as potentially enormous growth drivers. Trading volume at South Korea's Upbit has climbed 273 percent since March, suggesting deepening Asian interest. Ripple processed $13 trillion in transactions last year — though without any crypto component, a reminder of the distance between payment processing and true reserve status.
For now, the market watches whether ETF and institutional demand can punch through the Coinbase sell walls, or whether the current pullback marks the beginning of a broader consolidation. The fundamentals have rarely looked better; the charts have rarely looked more stretched.
