The token's latest chapter is being written less by retail enthusiasm and more by the quiet mechanics of institutional finance. Over the past fortnight, XRP has been the subject of a JPMorgan settlement executed in the blink of an eye, a $275 million debt raise, and a first-time ETF position from Goldman Sachs — a convergence that suggests the asset is carving out a role that extends well beyond speculative trading.

Goldman's Debut and the ETF Rebound

Goldman Sachs disclosed a maiden XRP ETF holding in its second-quarter filing, revealing $86.5 million spread across five spot products. The bank reported zero exposure at the end of the first quarter, making the position a notable entry point for one of Wall Street's most closely watched institutions.

The timing aligns with a recovery in fund flows that had stumbled badly earlier in August. The week ending August 8 saw net inflows collapse by 93% to just $1.01 million, dragging combined net assets down to $964 million. Since then, the picture has brightened considerably. By the week of August 21, the seven US spot XRP ETFs recorded net inflows of roughly 19.9 million XRP, pushing combined assets to approximately $1.24 billion.

Daily figures reinforce the stabilization. On August 18, funds logged net inflows of about $5.81 million, led by Bitwise at roughly $2.24 million and Grayscale at around $1.94 million, with total net assets sitting near $941 million. Month-to-date inflows for August stand at approximately $56.86 million, while cumulative inflows since launch have reached about $1.55 billion. Trading volume for the month surpassed $500 million through August 20, including a single-day tally of roughly $125 million.

JPMorgan's Five-Second Settlement

The Goldman disclosure was hardly the only institutional headline. On Monday, JPMorgan's blockchain unit Kinexys, working alongside Ripple, Mastercard, and Ondo, completed a cross-border redemption of a tokenized US Treasury fund on the XRP Ledger in under five seconds. The transaction serves as a practical demonstration that the ledger can handle institutional settlement processes outside traditional banking hours.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

Ripple Prime, the company's institutional brokerage arm, separately closed a private placement on August 18, upsized to $275 million. The note carries an 8.25% coupon and matures in 2031. Piper Sandler & Co. led the offering, with KBRA assigning a BBB rating consistent with Ripple Prime's existing issuer rating. Proceeds are earmarked for expanding the brokerage business that gives institutional clients access to digital assets.

RLUSD Moves Into Lending

The stablecoin side of the ecosystem is also evolving. Ripple, together with Clearpool and Cicada Partners, unveiled an institutional credit fund that deploys RLUSD as the primary lending instrument on the XRP Ledger. Fintech and payments firms can now draw credit directly in the stablecoin — a shift that transforms RLUSD from a pure payments vehicle into a component of institutional credit infrastructure.

Ripple President Monica Long flagged this trajectory in early August, describing an industry-wide pivot toward end-to-end on-chain trading. Geographic expansion continues as well: a partnership with South Korea's Jeonbuk Bank will route cross-border remittances through Ripple Payments. The network processed $1.3 trillion in transactions during Q2 2025 and now works with more than 300 institutions across 55 countries.

On the protocol side, Ripple voted to include the Permission Delegation extension in the XRPL v3.3.0 update. The feature, part of a six-extension package released in early August, enables granular access controls for regulated institutions — alongside an encrypted balances function for certain tokenized assets.

Price Action and the Longer View

The market has taken notice, though not without turbulence. XRP trades near $1.43–$1.44, up roughly 29% over 30 days and 44% over the past week. A 2.7% pullback on the day, however, underscores that the rally is not a straight line. A flash crash on the previous Saturday saw the token shed 37% within minutes — a stark reminder of lingering fragility.

The longer-term picture remains sobering. XRP sits about 55% below its 52-week high of $3.18 set on September 14, and the 12-month return is negative at minus 50%. A separate development added regulatory noise: the SEC scrapped its public meeting scheduled for August 14, which had included crypto rules on the agenda, briefly reviving uncertainty around the token's legal status.

Ripple also moved 50 million XRP to an unknown wallet on August 13, with 1 million subsequently forwarded to Binance — a transfer pattern traders monitor closely, though it does not necessarily signal imminent selling.

The institutional scaffolding around XRP is undeniably thickening. Whether these partnerships translate into measurable on-chain volume — the metric that would give the narrative lasting substance — remains the key question for investors watching from the sidelines.
