XRP's Institutional Chessboard: Swaps, Treasury Vehicles, and a Token Caught Between Milestones

At $1.42, XRP finds itself in an unusual spot: operationally busier than ever, yet trading 26% above its 50-day moving average of $1.13 after a week that delivered a 12% gain and a monthly advance of 33%. Friday's session was quiet—down a marginal 0.2%—but the calm belies a flurry of institutional activity that has reshaped the token's infrastructure in a matter of days.
The Institutional On-Ramp Widens
Ripple's prime brokerage arm has switched on its "Delta One" desk, giving hedge funds and asset managers access to US equities, indices, and cryptocurrencies through total return swaps. The unit operates on a regulatory net capital base of $1 billion, supplemented by $275 million raised through a private placement of unsecured senior notes earmarked for institutional market expansion.
The build-out extends to the ledger itself. Ripple has launched an AI-only security review of the XRP Ledger's lending protocol V1.1 via the Sherlock Audit Engine, a move designed to enable native on-chain credit markets. Meanwhile, Evernorth Holdings—an XRP-focused treasury firm—has received SEC effectiveness for its registration statement and, following a merger with Armada Acquisition Corp. II, will list on the Nasdaq under the ticker XRPN, creating another public vehicle for institutional XRP exposure.
The stablecoin side is compounding the story: RLUSD's market capitalization has crossed the $2 billion threshold for the first time, with roughly $1 billion of that supply issued on the XRP Ledger itself.
Wall Street's Mixed Signals
Goldman Sachs, in its latest SEC filing, disclosed an $86.5 million position across five spot XRP ETFs—a notable reversal after the bank had exited its holdings entirely in the first quarter. That institutional vote of confidence stands in contrast to analyst caution elsewhere. Geoffrey Kendrick of Standard Chartered trimmed his year-end 2026 target for XRP from $8.00 to $2.80 on Thursday, citing difficult chart patterns, while maintaining his 2030 target of $28.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?
Derivatives data tells a similar story of building conviction: estimated leverage ratios for XRP at one major exchange hit a seven-month high, and open interest climbed substantially during last week's rally.
The Washington Calendar Looms
The immediate catalyst for recent price action was twofold. On August 19, the US Treasury doubled its long-dated bond buyback programs from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation, triggering a broad yield sell-off and a crypto-wide rally that liquidated roughly $1.4 billion in short positions. The same day, President Donald Trump hosted Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse at the White House as part of a crypto industry meeting, where Trump called for a "fair version" of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.
XRP at one point gained more than half its value that week, aided by Bitcoin's breakout above $77,000. ETF flows have since reinforced the trend: after a mid-August lull, US spot XRP ETFs recorded $18.38 million in inflows on August 21—their best single-day showing since May—followed by $23.87 million on August 25, marking nine consecutive days of positive flows.
Ripple president Monica Long described an institutional "light switch moment" on X in early August, particularly around the 24/7 trading trend. Large XRP transaction volumes also jumped 280% in a single day while the token traded near $1.10, signaling growing infrastructure usage even without an immediate price effect.
A September of Crosscurrents
The Senate has pushed its final vote on the Clarity Act to September 15, after Majority Leader John Thune filed for cloture just before the summer recess. Market sentiment has since cooled dramatically: Polymarket odds of passage have fallen from 58% to below 20%. A positive vote would effectively clear the legislative path; failure would likely extinguish the regulatory catalyst for the remainder of 2026 and possibly into 2027.
The SEC did offer some relief on August 19, easing rules for crypto token issuances with a new startup exemption allowing projects to raise up to $5 million over four years. On the technical side, Ripple released XRP Ledger version 3.3.0 on August 7, introducing five amendments covering privacy, batch transactions, and sponsored fees—including Confidential MPT for private token holdings and Permission Delegation for secure rights transfer. Over 60% of ledger nodes had upgraded by August 23, and product manager Julian Berridi announced updates to developer libraries xrpl.js and xrpl-py.
Supply dynamics remain measured: Ripple released 1 billion XRP from escrow on August 1 but moved 700 million tokens back into lockup, leaving a net circulation increase of just 300 million.
With the XRPL Apex conference in New York slated for late October, the ecosystem has no shortage of potential catalysts. But for now, XRP's fate hinges on September 15—a date that pits incremental regulatory progress against a high-stakes political vote that could define the token's trajectory well into next year.
