XRP's Escrow Carousel and Asian Expansion Paint a Tale of Two Markets

The monthly ritual played out again this week: Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP from its escrow contract on Tuesday, only to re-lock 700 million tokens—worth roughly $952 million—by Wednesday. The three transactions, split into tranches of 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million, followed the company's long-standing pattern of returning the bulk of released coins to custody.

That leaves approximately 31.28 billion tokens still held in escrow accounts. Historical precedent suggests Ripple typically re-locks between 600 million and 800 million of the released supply, meaning only 200 million to 400 million tokens actually enter free circulation each month. The mechanism has been a contractual fixture of Ripple's issuance schedule for years, and crypto lawyer Bill Morgan argues it repeatedly debunks the narrative that Ripple is dumping tokens on the market.

Price Action Tells a Cautious Story

The market's response, however, has been muted. XRP trades at $1.33, down 3.6% on the day and 7.2% over the past week. The pullback follows a sharp rally that still leaves the token up 23% on a monthly basis—a recovery that began when XRP bottomed at a 52-week low of $0.9887 in mid-August. Despite that rebound, the asset remains 58% below its September high of $3.18.

The recent slide looks less like a fundamental reversal and more like a breather after a steep ascent, with profit-taking dominating short-term sentiment. Broader market pressure, including a geopolitical warning from Donald Trump regarding Iran, has also weighed on risk assets.

Institutional Demand Tells a Different Story

While spot market momentum has cooled, institutional appetite tells a contrasting tale. US spot XRP ETFs recorded net inflows of $110.49 million in the week through August 28—a record for the year and a 177% jump from the prior week. Cumulative inflows since launch range between $1.6 billion and $1.79 billion depending on the counting method, and a Bloomberg analyst notes demand has remained resilient despite price volatility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

The Bitwise XRP Spot ETF leads fund providers with $507.23 million in assets under management and roughly 35% market share. Franklin and Canary follow with $370 million and $341.6 million, respectively. Direct institutional exposure is also building: Goldman Sachs holds $87.45 million in XRP, while Jane Street and Millennium each hold approximately $16 million.

Ripple Expands Beyond the Token

The company is simultaneously broadening its institutional footprint. Ripple Prime's Delta-One division launched Wednesday, offering total-return swaps on US equities, indices, and digital assets, backed by over $1 billion in equity, a $275 million private placement, and a $200 million credit facility.

The partnership pipeline is equally active. Ripple Custody announced a collaboration with SettleMint on August 28, integrating its custody solution into SettleMint's Digital Asset Lifecycle Platform to serve regulated financial institutions across the Asia-Pacific region. The Boston Consulting Group projects tokenized assets could reach $88 trillion in volume by 2035.

Two days later, Ripple revealed a deal with South Korea's JB Jeonbuk Bank for cross-border payments and digital financial services. The bank joins a growing roster of Korean partners, including Kyobo Life Insurance, which is working with Ripple on tokenized government bonds, and KBank, which is pursuing blockchain integration.

A Nasdaq Listing Looms

A larger corporate development is also taking shape. The SEC has declared Evernorth Holdings' registration statement effective, with Armada Acquisition Corp. II shareholders scheduled to vote on the proposed merger on September 30. If approved, the combined entity would list on the Nasdaq under the ticker XRPN in late Q3 or early Q4 2026. Evernorth plans to hold roughly 473 million XRP and actively deploy the treasury into the XRP ecosystem through lending, yield strategies, and infrastructure investments.

Protocol Upgrades Advance in Parallel

Technical development on the XRP Ledger continues apace. The fixCleanup3_3_0 security package has reached 82.86% validator support, clearing the two-week activation window, with earliest mainnet activation slated for September 11. The update addresses vulnerabilities in vaults, lending functions, and automated market makers.

Version 3.3.0, rolled out in early August, introduced five new features including private token balances and atomic multi-transactions. Its predecessor, version 3.2.0, has now secured over 80% approval from default validators for security-related changes. The forthcoming "Confidential Transfers" capability would enable encrypted balances for institutional multi-purpose tokens.

The picture for investors remains bifurcated: short-term price action is dominated by profit-taking and macro headwinds, while the structural foundation—record ETF inflows, expanding bank partnerships, and ongoing protocol upgrades—points to institutional interest that is increasingly decoupling from daily market swings.
