XRP's Divergence Deepens: Record Fund Demand Meets a Stubborn Spot Market

Spot XRP ETFs saw $28.14M inflows on Aug 26, yet XRP fell 4.4% on the week. On-chain growth and regulatory progress contrast with price weakness.

XRP ETF Inflows Hit $28M but Price Slips: Institutional vs Retail Gap

The gap between what institutions are doing with XRP and what the token's price is doing has rarely been wider. Spot XRP ETFs just logged their strongest single-day intake in over seven months—$28.14 million on August 26—yet the cryptocurrency closed that same session lower, a disconnect that has come to define the current tape.

That $28.14 million figure capped seven consecutive days of net inflows, according to media reports. The cumulative haul across the seven approved funds stood at roughly $1.57 billion by August 24, with total net assets pegged near $1.399 billion. The streak marked the products' best week since May, a sharp reversal from a period of tepid demand that had preceded it.

The price, however, tells a more complicated story. XRP was changing hands near $1.40, down 4.4 percent on the week, after touching an interim high of $1.66 on August 21. That peak followed a roughly 70 percent run from the cycle low struck on August 17, a rally that has since given back some ground. On a 30-day basis, the token still shows a gain of about 29 to 30 percent, while year-to-date it remains roughly 24 percent in the red. The whipsaw nature of the move—sharp advances followed by equally sharp pullbacks—underscores just how fragile the recent momentum has been.

Market participants point to forced liquidations of leveraged positions as the culprit behind the most recent slide, even as institutional capital continued to flow in the opposite direction. That dynamic—steady accumulation on one side, short-term pain on the other—has left XRP in an awkward spot: structurally supported, but technically bruised.

On-Chain Activity Paints a Fuller Picture

Beyond the fund flows, network data suggests the institutional thesis has real legs. The number of funded XRP accounts has climbed past eight million, while average daily active addresses rose to roughly 35,700 in August from about 26,400 in July. Large transactions exceeding $1 million jumped around 280 percent on August 18, a signal that big players are increasingly engaging with the network.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

Ripple, the company most associated with XRP, has been busy on the operational front. On August 18, it announced the rollout of Ripple Payments at Jeonbuk Bank, adding to its roster of banking partners. It also expanded its settlement corridors into Brazil and Colombia, bringing the total country count to six. The XRP Ledger processed 2.64 million daily transactions in the relevant week, with 285,000 active accounts. Meanwhile, the supply of Ripple USD grew to $1.28 billion, with roughly 78 percent minted on the XRP Ledger and 22 percent on Ethereum—evidence that the underlying infrastructure is seeing increased usage independent of the token's price swings.

A separate credit model developed by Clearpool, Cicada Partners, and Ripple, built on the XRP Ledger and the RLUSD stablecoin, was also reported during the same period.

Regulatory Milestones Stack Up

The regulatory calendar is adding its own momentum. The SEC has formally acknowledged a Cboe filing seeking approval to list options on several spot XRP ETFs, triggering a 45-day review period that could be extended. Lawmakers in a fourth US state have introduced a digital reserve bill explicitly naming XRP as an eligible asset, following similar efforts in Texas, Utah, and Arizona.

A major European index provider is said to have added XRP to a broad digital-asset index alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum, citing ETF-driven institutional demand and improved regulatory clarity. On the product side, ProShares Trust filed a Rule 24f-2 notice on August 27 covering both its XRP ETF and a leveraged ProShares Ultra XRP ETF. Morningstar Funds Trust followed with a supplemental filing on August 28 that includes a combined S&P 500/XRP strategy ETF from Cyber Hornet. And 21Shares' XRP ETF, trading under the ticker TOXR, is set to switch its reference index from CF Benchmarks to the FTSE-ripple:native index effective August 31.

Whales and the September Question

Large holders have also been active. More than 38 major transfers totaling 380 million tokens were recorded within a single week, with commentators linking the accumulation to a possible procedural vote on crypto legislation in September. Should that expectation materialize, it could serve as the next catalyst alongside the ETF inflows.

A market report attributed the broader crypto rally, XRP included, to the US Treasury's expanded bond-buyback policy, which has encouraged risk-on capital flows. That macro tailwind, combined with the steady drip of ETF demand and a thickening regulatory pipeline, paints a picture of an asset whose fundamentals are improving even as its price action remains hostage to short-term positioning.

For now, the two-speed market persists: the structural story keeps getting stronger, but the spot chart keeps reminding traders that inflows alone don't guarantee a sustained uptrend.
