Volkswagen's bet on XPeng technology has yet to translate into showroom traffic. The ID. UNYX 08, the first vehicle to emerge from the two companies' collaboration, averaged just 267 sales per month between April and August, according to a Reuters report. Volkswagen's monthly target for 2026 stands at 3,622 units — a gap that leaves the maiden joint model far short of the level the German automaker had in mind.

The shortfall matters for XPeng because the company is actively marketing its engineering capabilities to outside manufacturers. On October 13, CEO He Xiaopeng used the Paris Automotive Summit to unveil XPENG AI ENGINEERING, opening the group's intelligent-vehicle technologies and development resources to global partners while calling for closer international cooperation across the industry. The Reuters figures serve as a counterweight to that pitch: a technical partnership, on its own, does not guarantee commercial success.

Two Yardsticks, One Stock

Investors should keep the two layers apart. The weak ID. UNYX 08 numbers concern the jointly developed vehicle's sales, not demand for XPeng's own models, so they cannot be projected wholesale onto the company's broader car business. Building out a technology offering and monetizing it are distinct propositions.

XPeng shares rose 3.8% on the day, though Reuters drew no link between its report and the move — leaving the Volkswagen news unable to account for the advance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XPeng?

Europe as the Growth Engine

The bigger strategic swing is Europe. Vice President Yeqing Zheng told Reuters on October 13 that XPeng plans additional production capacity with a local partner, weighing either a new plant or the use of an existing facility. A decision is expected within a few months, and the line is meant to start operating when Europe's "Made in Europe" rules take effect — tying the production plan explicitly to the regulatory calendar.

Neither option has been settled: a greenfield factory is no more decided than the lease of an existing site. What is fixed is the intent to work with a local manufacturing partner, and no secured start of production can be inferred from it. The site decision would firm up the plan; only the subsequent build-out could turn it into actual capacity. That decision window is the next key checkpoint.

The scale of the ambition was laid out by He Xiaopeng on October 12. According to media reports, he is targeting one million vehicles sold worldwide per year by 2030, with half of that volume coming from Europe. It is a desired order of magnitude, not delivered sales — and the production plan fits the same logic, pairing European sales ambitions with local manufacturing considerations. At the Paris Motor Show, XPeng also brought the G9L to the European market, expanding its lineup while the factory question remains open.

A Busy Product Calendar

XPeng's own launches are running on a separate track. On Thursday the company opened pre-sales in China for the mid-size MONA L05 SUV at an entry price of 169,800 yuan, with the official market launch set for October 29. The company also said it will integrate Google Play natively into its vehicles, with rollout planned for early 2027 — an expansion of its work with Google.

Those initiatives reach customers through channels entirely distinct from the Volkswagen cooperation. The near-term date to watch is the MONA L05 launch on October 29. For judging the partnership strategy, what counts is the distance between ID. UNYX 08 sales and Volkswagen's target — a hurdle the Reuters report makes plain, without settling the verdict on XPeng's technology partnerships as a whole.
