XPeng Nears 52-Week Low as JPMorgan Slashes Target and Paris Looms

XPeng's September deliveries rose 5% month on month but fell 1% year on year, and JPMorgan cut its rating to Neutral with a price target of $11.50.

XPeng's September delivery tally of 41,256 vehicles might look respectable on paper, but it is doing nothing for the stock. Investors who have waited through years of loss-making expansion now want operating profit and dependable margins — not another volume record.

The share price tells the story bluntly. At a Thursday close of EUR 8.41, the equity sits just 0.7% above its 52-week low of EUR 8.20, and it has shed 53% since the start of the year. That slide reflects deepening doubt about the business model rather than any single bad print.

Volume Grows, But So Does the Doubt

September's 41,256 deliveries represented a gain of just over 5% from the prior month, yet they were down nearly 1% year on year. For the third quarter of 2026, XPeng moved 118,390 units — a 15% sequential improvement that looks solid in isolation.

The backdrop, however, is unforgiving. As Dow Jones reported, growth across China's EV industry as a whole fell short of expectations during the traditionally strong September selling season. Discounting at home remains relentless, and those markdowns are eating into margins across the sector. XPeng's continued unprofitability weighs all the more heavily in that environment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XPeng?

One bright spot: the L03 model line topped 10,000 units in a single month for the first time in September. But when Chinese market growth cools, unprofitable niche players are typically the first to feel it.

JPMorgan Pulls the Plug on Its Bull Case

Analyst sentiment has shifted accordingly. JPMorgan downgraded the stock from Overweight to Neutral on Tuesday, according to media reports, and cut its price target sharply from $24 to $11.50. The analysts pointed to structural challenges in China's auto sector as the rationale.

Such a deep target reduction underscores how much of the old growth narrative has faded. The consensus still amounts to a hold recommendation, but the downward revisions are unambiguous.

Paris as the Next Proving Ground

Management, meanwhile, is trying to move forward through new products and overseas markets. XPeng plans to unveil its new G9L SUV at the Paris Motor Show, with the global launch and the opening of European order books set for October 12, 2026, according to company statements. Pricing for European markets is to be announced the same day. The push is meant to strengthen the brand's international footprint and open sales channels beyond China.

The ambition is clear, but so are the risks: overseas expansion burns through cash, while tariffs and protectionist sentiment make market entry harder still. How the G9L is received after its Paris debut — and how XPeng manages the price pressure at home — will be the two factors that matter most for the stock from here.

A Difficult Turning Point

XPeng stands at a genuinely awkward juncture. Until the company lays out a credible path to operating profitability, even its better delivery numbers are likely to fall flat with investors. The prospect of a swift market turnaround does not, on current evidence, outweigh the risks of a prolonged price war. Delivery headlines alone should not distract from the bigger picture: as long as margins erode and losses persist, the shares remain a highly speculative bet with meaningful downside.
