Xiaomi's Beijing car plant has become something of a showcase. Visitors attending the World Media Summit toured the facility this week, and Xinhua Silk Road is holding it up as a model of advanced manufacturing. More than 700 industrial robots work the line, backed by AI-driven quality checks. For anyone holding the stock, though, the interesting question isn't how the factory looks — it's whether the technology inside it eventually shows up in the earnings.

The scale is already there. Xiaomi had delivered more than 800,000 vehicles in total by the end of October. On Sunday, the company reported over 50,000 electric cars shipped for October 2026 alone — the highest monthly figure of the year, according to Reuters, though Xiaomi did not disclose an exact number. That delivery record is the clearest company-specific signal in the current news flow, but it measures volume, not profitability. A strong shipment number on its own says nothing about the profit contribution behind it.

A robot shift that corrects its own mistakes

On Tuesday, Xiaomi published footage of its CyberOne-02 humanoid robots sorting center-console trim panels. The trial ran across an eight-hour shift with two charging breaks. According to the company, the robots detected and corrected anomalies on their own and coordinated with the production control system. Xiaomi describes the exercise as a preliminary validation at a single workstation. For a proper economic assessment, details on the number of parts handled and the level of human intervention would matter.

That self-correction capability is the part worth watching. A robot earns its keep when it copes with deviations and keeps a process reliable. Xiaomi aims to integrate humanoid robots into its factories within five years, but the CyberOne-02 remains a prototype. The upside for shareholders is a long-term one — provided the tests turn into repeatable, economically viable applications. Charging breaks, meanwhile, are part of the operating arithmetic: their impact depends on how cleanly they can be scheduled into the production flow.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

Why the margin is the real scoreboard

The financial backdrop sharpens the scrutiny. In the second quarter of 2026, the gross margin of the Smart EV, AI and other new initiatives segment fell to 19.2%, down from 26.4% a year earlier. Automation would be especially valuable to Xiaomi if it could cushion that margin pressure. That is where robotics and valuation connect: technical progress gains economic weight only when it shows up in profitability.

Group adjusted net profit came in at roughly RMB 6.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, about 43% below the year-earlier quarter. Third-quarter results are scheduled for November 24.

Market tailwind, company headwind

The stock's recent move has less to do with the factory floor. Xiaomi gained 3.9% as Hong Kong technology shares rallied broadly, a swing China Daily links partly to the US midterm election results, alongside expectations of lower oil prices and US interest rates. That is a sentiment boost, not evidence of an operational turnaround. A friendlier market can support a valuation, but it doesn't answer whether the company's business outlook is actually improving.

The cautious analyst outlook cuts against the rally's optimism, and it explains why strong deliveries and a rising share price don't automatically tell the same story. Those are forecasts, not reported results.

The bar for Xiaomi is therefore set by two things at once: whether the smart factory's capabilities translate into more resilient earnings, and whether the profit line can carry a re-rating. The upcoming third-quarter numbers will be a nearer test of that than any accelerated robot demonstration — and a higher hurdle than good market mood alone.
