Wienerberger's Slide Leaves Analysts Scrambling to Reset Price Targets

Wienerberger's mid-October guidance cut has forced sell-side analysts back to their spreadsheets, and the resulting round of target revisions paints a picture of a stock that has run out of near-term catalysts. The Austrian brickmaker's downward revision to its full-year 2026 operating EBITDA outlook — now pegged at EUR 640 million to EUR 650 million — has triggered a wave of cautious ratings and sharply reduced price objectives.

The shares were changing hands at EUR 15.34 in pre-market trading on Wednesday, a mere 2.1% above the 52-week low of EUR 15.03 touched in recent sessions. Tuesday's close came in at EUR 15.30, leaving a gap of just 1.8% to that floor. Since the start of the year, the stock has shed half its value.

Two Houses, One Verdict: Hold

Jefferies initiated coverage of the Vienna-listed group on Tuesday, assigning a "Hold" rating with a EUR 16 price target. The move, dated October 13, signals the broker sees scant scope for a swift re-rating.

The Wiener Privatbank had already moved in the same direction a day earlier. On October 12, the Austrian institution kept its "Halten" recommendation but slashed its target to EUR 16.40 from EUR 23.10. Both houses now place fair value only marginally above where the stock currently trades.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?

The reasoning offered by the Wiener Privatbank centred on an expectedly tough sector environment and the absence of any short-term recovery in residential construction. Other analysts had already trimmed their targets in similar fashion, though some continue to view the risk-reward balance more favourably.

From EUR 800 Million to EUR 640 Million: A Guidance Story

The downgrades trace back to Wienerberger's own admission that trading conditions have deteriorated. According to APA news agency reports, the company had originally aimed for operating EBITDA above EUR 800 million before adjusting that goal to roughly EUR 700 million in July. The latest cut brings the 2026 target down to EUR 640 million to EUR 650 million.

For the third quarter of 2026, management guided toward revenue of approximately EUR 1.2 billion to EUR 1.3 billion, paired with operating EBITDA of EUR 170 million to EUR 180 million.

The company pointed to a more hesitant recovery in construction activity during September, compounded by persistent weakness in new-build residential markets in the UK and North America. Since late August, raw material, energy and logistics costs have climbed sharply, adding further strain.

UBS Lightens Its Load

Amid the reassessment, Wienerberger's shareholder register has shifted. A mandatory disclosure revealed that UBS reduced its holding of voting rights and financial instruments to 3.96% as of October 8, down from a previously reported 4.09%.

All Eyes on November 12

Management has responded to the downturn by accelerating existing cost-reduction programmes and launching a strategic review of individual business units. Investors will get their first detailed look at both initiatives on November 12, when Wienerberger publishes full results for the first nine months of 2026 alongside an update on the savings measures and the portfolio examination.
