Wienerberger's equity has spent the year in retreat, and the closing stretch of 2026 offers little relief. The Vienna-listed building materials group has shed 45 percent of its value since January, with the stock changing hands at EUR 16.80 on Monday — barely above the 52-week low of EUR 16.52 touched just days earlier.

The slump is not the product of a single shock. It reflects a housing construction cycle that has stalled across key markets, a profit warning that forced management to scale back its ambitions, and a leadership vacuum that has left investors guessing about the company's direction.

Guidance Cut and a Soft Quarter

More than a month ago, Wienerberger trimmed its full-year outlook, citing deteriorating conditions in residential construction. The company now targets an operating EBITDA of EUR 700 million for 2026. The revision followed a second-quarter interim report that laid bare the mounting strain: revenue of EUR 1.4 billion and operating EBITDA of EUR 230 million for the period.

Management pointed to weakening new-build activity, particularly in North America and the UK, compounded by cost inflation that has squeezed margins across the board.

CEO Departs on Health Grounds

The operational pressures were compounded mid-summer by upheaval at the top. Heimo Scheuch stepped down as chief executive more than a month ago, citing health reasons, with immediate effect. Gerhard Hanke was swiftly appointed interim CEO to maintain operational continuity.

Roughly three weeks ago, the group also reshuffled its capital markets communications. Dr. Claus Ehrenbeck took over as Senior Vice President and head of investor relations, succeeding Therese Jandér. The company also halted parts of its brick production around the same time, another sign of efforts to adapt to weaker demand.

BlackRock Lowers Its Stake

Market participants have taken note of the turbulence. BlackRock, the US asset manager, disclosed that its total position in Wienerberger fell below the 4 percent reporting threshold on September 24. In a filing published by the company on September 28, the stake was shown to have dropped from 4.96 percent to 3.99 percent. Of that, 2.75 percent comprised voting rights from shares, supplemented by financial instruments.

The disclosure, released with a delay, offered no rationale for the transaction and made no reference to the recent share price performance. Even so, the move by a major institutional holder was widely read as a cautious signal on the stock.

Analysts Stay Cautious

Sell-side sentiment has followed a similar path. On September 11, Morgan Stanley lowered its price target for Wienerberger while maintaining an "Underweight" rating. The bank had already downgraded the stock from "Equal-weight" on June 10, cutting its target to EUR 23 and flagging risks in the new-build sector.

For now, the market environment remains difficult as long as a sustained recovery in European and North American residential construction fails to materialize. A near-term rebound appears unlikely.

What to Watch Next

Upcoming dates on the financial calendar are taking on added significance. Wienerberger will participate in the GEWINN trade fair in Vienna on October 22, 2026. The more consequential event comes on November 12, 2026, when the company publishes results for the first through third quarters of 2026 and hosts a conference call. That interim report should offer concrete evidence of whether the measures taken so far are gaining traction — and how severely the housing headwind continues to weigh on earnings.
