Vienna's Wiener Privatbank has taken a sharp axe to its valuation of Wienerberger, cutting the fair value on the Austrian brickmaker's shares from EUR 23.10 to EUR 16.40 while keeping a "Hold" rating intact. Analyst Nicolas Kneip pointed to a near-term market environment that remains tough, upcoming capacity adjustments, and temporary production shutdowns as the chief drivers behind the downgrade. A swift recovery in residential construction, he added, is not on the horizon.

The revision places Wiener Privatbank alongside a growing chorus of cautious voices on the stock. Berenberg also trimmed its price target, taking it from EUR 25.00 down to EUR 19.00, though the German research house stuck with its buy recommendation. Berenberg attributed its adjustment to higher mortgage rates, stubborn inflation, and the operational obstacles those forces create.

Core Markets Still Dragging

Wienerberger has been contending with headwinds for some time. The company has acknowledged that demand for residential construction remains weak, particularly in key markets such as the United Kingdom and North America. Adding to the strain are noticeable cost increases across energy, raw materials, and logistics — pressures that are squeezing margins.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Wienerberger?

Management is pushing back with a package of countermeasures. Wienerberger has announced accelerated cost optimization alongside a comprehensive strategic review of its existing business segments, a move aimed at aligning the portfolio with changed market conditions.

On the guidance front, the group expects full-year 2026 operating EBITDA of between EUR 640 million and EUR 650 million. For the third quarter, Wienerberger is targeting revenue of roughly EUR 1.2 billion to EUR 1.3 billion, paired with operating EBITDA in a range of EUR 170 million to EUR 180 million.

Market Awaits November Update

Investors will get a clearer picture of actual trading performance and the progress of the savings measures when Wienerberger publishes its report for the first nine months on November 12, 2026. Attention is now focused on whether the strategic review will yield concrete steps to stabilize the business.

The market has already rendered a harsh verdict. The stock closed Monday at EUR 15.38, a decline of 1.4 percent. By Tuesday it was trading at EUR 15.33, down 1.7 percent on the day. Since the start of the year, the shares have surrendered roughly 50 percent of their value.
