A statutory health insurance provider and a historic football club in northwest Germany are joining forces to promote physical activity across all age groups, with a particular emphasis on youth development and inclusive sport.
The BKK firmus, a regional health insurer, will become the official health partner of VfL Osnabrück starting with the 2026/27 season. The partnership, announced in late July, aims to weave preventive health measures more tightly into the fabric of the club’s activities throughout the Osnabrück region.
Rather than focusing on the professional squad, the collaboration targets multiple levels of the club’s ecosystem, with a clear priority on youth academies and grassroots sport. Youth sport takes centre stage
A core pillar of the agreement is the support for the VfL school championship, a competitive format that lets students from across the region face off in athletic contests while building a positive relationship with physical activity. Alongside this, the partners intend to organise football camps during school holidays. These camps are meant to do more than just hone sporting talent — organisers say they will also foster social skills and promote awareness of healthy lifestyles.
Dirk Harrer, chairman of BKK firmus, stressed that linking sport with prevention is an effective way to sustainably improve quality of life for local residents. “The connection between sport and prevention is a powerful tool to enhance the well-being of people in our community,” he said.
Walking football opens doors for older participants
The partnership extends beyond youth and competitive sport. One of the planned offerings is walking football, a slower-paced version of the game tailored to older adults or people with physical limitations. The format is designed to boost inclusion and enable lifelong participation in active movement.
Dr Michael Welling, managing director of VfL Osnabrück, highlighted the synergy effects of the cooperation. He noted that the alliance with the health insurer supports the club’s efforts to fulfil its social responsibility in the region and to act as a driver for health and exercise beyond match days.
Both organisations are rooted in Osnabrück, and the partners expect this geographic proximity to foster strong identification with the programmes on offer. The measures are designed so they can be integrated directly into the daily lives of people in the city and the surrounding district.
The first joint projects will be implemented gradually from the start of the 2026/27 season. The partnership is conceived as a long-term initiative intended to strengthen regional health structures by combining sporting expertise with the preventive knowledge of a health insurance fund.
