Vulcan Energy's equity slipped 2.0% on Wednesday to close at EUR 1.15, leaving the stock hovering just above its 52-week trough of EUR 1.13. The retreat came against a broader commodity backdrop that has turned distinctly hostile: rising US Treasury yields and a firmer dollar have made capital-intensive development stories less appealing to investors, a dynamic that bites especially hard on pre-revenue battery-metals names.

That sector-wide repricing was compounded by weakness on the futures exchanges. Chinese lithium futures shed roughly a quarter of their value during September, according to Bloomberg, as persistent demand concerns weighed on sentiment. The lithium carbonate contract on the Guangzhou exchange slid from more than 160,000 yuan at the start of the month to below 120,000 yuan per tonne. Reports indicate that Vulcan's recent share-price softness stemmed from this market environment rather than any fresh company-specific disclosure.

Ownership Signals Draw Attention

The latest leg down followed a Tuesday filing in which Vulcan Energy disclosed a voting-rights notification concerning Francis Wedin. The mandatory announcement flagged an acquisition or disposal of voting-rights shares and named affiliated entities within the chain of holdings. Shifts among major shareholders tend to attract close scrutiny because they offer a window into how key investors are positioning themselves — and at Vulcan, those signals are landing in a market already jittery after sustained selling pressure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Adsorbent Output Begins

On the operational front, Vulcan confirmed roughly a week ago that commercial production of VULSORB®, its proprietary lithium-extraction adsorbent, had started in Germany. The alumina-based material sits at the heart of the company's own extraction process, and manufacturing is set to run alongside a production partner over a period of 18 to 24 months. The first batches are earmarked for the extraction columns at the Lionheart project, as Vulcan lays the groundwork for equipping the technical plant. Commissioning of Lionheart remains scheduled for the second half of 2028. No direct link between the VULSORB announcement and the share price at the time was established in the mandatory disclosures.

Second Permit Extends Lionheart's Runway

Permitting has also moved forward. About two weeks ago, Vulcan secured its second lithium production licence, named Ilka, for the Lionheart project in the Upper Rhine Valley. The approval carries a term of six years, running until 9 September 2032. Beyond that phase, the company intends to merge the site with its first licence, LiThermEx, into a unified extraction permit spanning 30 years.

Board Reshuffle

Leadership changes have accompanied the project milestones. Roughly three weeks ago, Vulcan appointed Angus Barker as Non-Executive Chair, elevating him to the head of the supervisory board after he had previously served as Lead Independent Director and deputy chairman.

With the horizon to Lionheart's targeted start stretching well into 2028, the path to commissioning remains a long-term undertaking. The phased production of the adsorbent material secures the equipment for the columns ahead of time, while the technical processes still need to be tested and readied within the projected deadlines. Market participants have greeted the mix of voting-rights filings and industrial preparations with restraint. Following the recent losses, the stock trades 1.7% above its 52-week low, with investors continuing to focus on whether the operational milestones can be delivered on schedule.
