Vulcan Energy’s project clues come from both the drill bit and the paperwork

Vulcan Energy reported positive modelled reinjection capacity at its Lionheart well, while Citigroup disclosed an increased voting-rights position.

Vulcan Energy: Drilling Test Aids Lionheart as Citigroup Voting Rights Rise

A pair of fresh updates on Vulcan Energy point in very different directions, yet both matter for how investors read the company’s next phase. One concerns a drilling test that supports the Lionheart development plan. The other is a filing that shows a higher reportable voting-rights stake at the company, without necessarily implying a larger direct shareholding.

The more operationally important of the two is the drilling work at LSC-3a. Vulcan said the test supports de-risking of the Lionheart project and, based on borehole data and modelling under planned operating conditions, points to a reinjection capacity of around 64 litres per second. That compares with a measured surface injection rate of around 35 litres per second and a current planning assumption of 40 litres per second for matrix injectors.

That distinction matters. The 64-litre figure is a modelled capacity under the intended pressure and temperature conditions, not a directly measured test result. Vulcan’s positive assessment therefore relates to expected performance in future operation, rather than a current proof of output at that level.

LSC-3a is the seventh of 28 planned wells and Vulcan’s first matrix reinjection well in sandstone. The company said the findings will feed into reservoir models and into planning for LSC-4 and LSC-5, giving the test relevance beyond the single well. Even so, it is still an input into the next stages of development, not a guarantee that the follow-on wells will perform as hoped.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

The broader Lionheart plan still rests on the assumptions laid out in the 2023 study, which envisages annual production of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate over a project life of 30 years. Lionheart is also intended to generate power for internal use and heat. The new drilling result supports one technical building block of that setup, but it does not confirm the full project outcome.

A separate disclosure from Friday adds another layer to the story. Citigroup reported a higher notifiable interest in Vulcan Energy, with the voting-rights share rising from 7,1056 percent to 8,1917 percent. The filing cites securities lending and contracts in ordinary market activity, which means the increase cannot automatically be read as a straightforward expansion of direct equity ownership.

That is an important distinction for investors. The filing describes reportable voting interests, not an operational milestone at Vulcan. By itself, it says little about the company’s project execution and should not be conflated with progress on Lionheart.

Vulcan did separately say, a little over three weeks ago, that commercial production of its in-house adsorbent VULSORB had begun in Germany. The first batches are earmarked for the initial fill of Lionheart’s lithium extraction columns, whose commissioning is planned for the second half of 2028. The company says the material should help reduce technology, supply-chain and project-execution risks.

Here too, the sequence matters. VULSORB production supports preparation for Lionheart, but it is not the same as Lionheart being in operation. For now, investors have one filing about ownership interests, and one test result about subsurface performance. Together, they show progress on different fronts, while also underlining how much still depends on execution.
