Vulcan Energy is asking investors to look past a widening deficit and toward a second-phase project that won't get a final green light for years. The Frankfurt-listed developer, which is working to extract lithium from thermal brine in Germany's Upper Rhine Valley, has sketched out the economics of its Ludwig expansion even as construction on its first plant is still underway.

A feasibility study puts capital expenditure for the planned second stage at EUR 1.26 billion. At an estimated operating cost of EUR 4,101 per tonne of lithium carbonate, Ludwig is designed to yield 21,100 tonnes of battery-grade material annually, alongside 3,125 gigawatt-hours of renewable heat per year. The model produces an internal rate of return of 25%.

None of that will be committed to concrete any time soon. A final investment decision on Ludwig is expected only after Lionheart — the company's first commercial phase — is built and brought online, a step the company's own economic model places in 2029. Lionheart itself remains on track for the start of commercial production in 2028, a target reaffirmed last Monday.

Half-Year Loss Widens as Revenue Shrinks

The financial backdrop to those ambitions is sobering. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Vulcan reported revenue of EUR 2.26 million, down from EUR 4.11 million a year earlier. The net loss ballooned to EUR 50.4 million from EUR 30.69 million in the prior-year period, according to figures released on September 9.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Heavy spending is baked into that shortfall. Development expenditure for the second quarter of 2026 reached EUR 92.0 million, most of it directed toward construction and procurement for Lionheart. Cash and deposits stood at EUR 273.9 million as of June 30, 2026.

Negative earnings are hardly unusual for a mining and renewable-energy venture still in its development phase. But the balance sheet lays bare just how much liquidity must be burned before the first gram of battery-grade lithium hydroxide ships — and management is already hunting for outside capital to keep the pipeline moving. The company is actively seeking additional strategic investors for Ludwig, with Asian partners among those being courted.

Board Reshuffle Aims at Execution Phase

Alongside the project planning, Vulcan has reshuffled its leadership. Roughly a week ago, Angus Barker took over as non-executive chair of the supervisory board. At the same time, company founder Dr. Francis Wedin stepped back from an executive role into a pure founder position, with responsibility for business development, the geothermal and lithium project pipeline, and the VULTEC technology unit. About a month earlier, Amanda Lacaze was appointed as an independent board member.

The changes are meant to sharpen the leadership structure for the coming build-out, drawing a line between day-to-day operational oversight and long-term strategic resource development.

Regulatory progress has continued in parallel. Last week, the Rhineland-Palatinate mining authority granted a second six-year extraction licence for the Landau geothermal field, extending the company's permitted runway to 2032.

Shares Stay Under Pressure

Investors, however, are focused on the financing risk. The stock closed Friday at EUR 1.38, down 46% since the start of the year, leaving a market capitalisation of EUR 650.60 million and a 52-week low of EUR 1.35. The market is no longer pricing in only the promise of a European raw-materials turnaround; it is increasingly weighting the funding hurdles that stand between Vulcan and its first commercial tonne of lithium in 2028.
