Vulcan Energy's Lithium Story Meets a Chinese Data Shock

Vulcan Energy slid 4.7% to EUR 1.43 after SMM more than doubled its lithium carbonate inventory tally, triggering a sector-wide selloff.

A methodology tweak by a Chinese market tracker has done more damage to Vulcan Energy Resources this week than anything the company itself has or hasn't announced. The Frankfurt-listed stock shed 4.7% on Monday to change hands at EUR 1.43, hovering just above its 52-week low of EUR 1.40 — and the trigger came from thousands of kilometres away.

SMM rewrites the inventory playbook

SMM, a widely followed Chinese price-reporting agency, revised how it tallies lithium carbonate inventories. The restatement more than doubled the reported stockpile overnight, from 78,800 tonnes to 175,000 tonnes. Traders read the bigger number as evidence of a physical market that is comfortably supplied, perhaps oversupplied, and lithium futures duly slid more than 14% across three sessions to roughly USD 20,100 per tonne, according to Bloomberg. The LIT lithium ETF dropped 2.66% on Thursday.

That distinction matters for anyone holding Vulcan: Monday's decline traces back to a sector-wide repricing rather than a fresh company disclosure. The stock moved in lockstep with other lithium names that also sold off sharply on Thursday.

Permits and personnel: the quiet company file

On the operational front, Vulcan has actually been busy. The mining authority of Rhineland-Palatinate granted a second production licence for the Lionheart project, covering the Ilka field, on Friday. It runs six years, through 9 September 2032, and sits alongside an earlier permit — giving the company two of the approvals it needs to extract the volumes Lionheart is designed to deliver. The licence area overlaps the ground where Vulcan already generates renewable heat through its Landau plant, part of a concept that pairs lithium extraction from geothermal brine with geothermal power generation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Leadership has shifted too. Angus Barker took over as Non-Executive Chair on Saturday, with founder Francis Wedin moving into a newly created Founder role focused on the growth portfolio and business development. Amanda Lacaze, formerly managing director and chief executive of Lynas Rare Earths, has served as an independent non-executive director since 17 August.

None of it has moved the needle. The stock closed Friday at EUR 1.50, down 2.1% on the day.

Ludwig's billion-euro arithmetic

The second German venture, Project Ludwig, carries a far heavier price tag. Its scoping study, completed about two weeks ago, puts capital expenditure at EUR 1.26 billion against planned annual output of 21,100 tonnes of lithium carbonate. The study pegs the after-tax net present value at EUR 1.73 billion, the internal rate of return at 20.2%, and operating costs at EUR 4,101 per tonne.

The cash burn already reflects the build-out. Vulcan spent EUR 92 million on development in the second quarter alone, bringing the first-half total to EUR 168 million — money directed mainly at construction and procurement for Lionheart. The pattern is clear: operational milestones are stacking up on paper while the funding burden keeps climbing.

Chart watchers see exhaustion, not a floor

Momentum indicators offer little comfort. At 28.9, the RSI places the shares in oversold territory, typically a sign that selling pressure is running out of steam. The longer view is grimmer — down 44% year-to-date, and 65% below the 52-week high of EUR 4.15 touched in October 2025. Since the Ludwig study landed a fortnight ago, the stock has given up roughly 12%.

Whether the proximity to the annual low marks the start of a stabilisation now depends less on the next corporate headline than on where Chinese inventory data head over the coming weeks.
