Vulcan Energy's Lionheart Timeline Stretches to 2028 as Founder's Stake Slips Below 2%

Vulcan Energy shares rose 2.1% to EUR 1.07 but remain down 59% in 2026, as Lionheart commissioning stays targeted for H2 2028 and founder Wedin cut his stake.

Vulcan Energy's shares have become a study in contrasts: the company keeps ticking off technical milestones in Germany, yet the equity itself remains pinned near its yearly lows. A modest 2.1% gain on the day lifted the stock to EUR 1.07, a bounce that looks more like a pause for breath than the start of any durable recovery — particularly with the stock down 59% since the start of the year.

The previous session told the other side of the story. On Thursday, the paper shed 8.9% to close at EUR 1.05, with persistent selling pressure pushing the quotation toward prior troughs. That gap between what the company is building and what the market is willing to pay for it has defined the stock for months.

Hardware Progress, Distant Payoff

On the industrial front, Vulcan delivered a tangible step forward roughly two weeks ago, when commercial-scale production of its proprietary VULSORB adsorbent got underway in Germany. The first batches are earmarked for filling the extraction columns at the flagship Lionheart project — evidence that the technology roadmap is not standing still.

That milestone, however, also underscores just how far away meaningful revenue remains. Commissioning at Lionheart is targeted for the second half of 2028. Between now and then, delays and additional financial burdens are anything but off the table. Lithium extraction demands elaborate plant with substantial lead times, and the multi-year gap to first production leaves investors exposed to a long stretch of execution risk.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Media reports suggest the company has also secured a second six-year extraction licence for Lionheart, with construction said to remain on schedule and first production still pencilled in for 2028. For the project itself, these are important prerequisites. For the capital market, they mostly mean one thing: patience — and in a demanding environment, the promise of future volumes is often not enough to spark sustained buying interest.

Ownership Shifts Cut Both Ways

On the shareholder register, a different picture has emerged. According to a voting rights notification, Francis Wedin's stake fell to 1.98% on 24 September, down from 4% previously. When a founder-level figure sheds a significant portion of their holding, investors tend to watch closely — such reallocations often carry more weight in market perception than interim industrial wins, especially when speculation about the motives or about further shifts among larger shareholders circulates on the trading floors.

Wedin's reduction came roughly a week ago, and he was not alone in crossing disclosure thresholds. The Goldman Sachs Group filed a voting rights notification for Vulcan Energy after a relevant threshold was touched on 17 September 2026. Multiple players reporting threshold breaches in recent weeks has added to the sense of flux around the ownership structure.

What Would It Take?

Weighing it all up, there is little to suggest chasing today's gain. Ramping up adsorbent output is unquestionably a key building block for the eventual extraction architecture, but with commissioning not due until the second half of 2028, the road stays long.

As long as voting rights changes such as Wedin's make the rounds and full project realisation sits years in the future, investor scepticism is likely to keep the upper hand. The coming months should reveal whether steady construction work at Lionheart is enough to counter the downward drift in the shares — for now, the day's advance does nothing to alter that cautious overall picture.
