Vulcan Energy Resources is pressing ahead with construction and permitting at its Lionheart project in Germany's Upper Rhine Valley, even as equity markets continue to punish the lithium developer. The shares changed hands at EUR 1.23 on the day covered by the primary report, a drop of 5.0 percent, bringing the year-to-date decline to 52 percent. A separate reading put the stock at EUR 1.29 at Thursday's close, with a 49 percent loss since the start of the year. The company's market capitalisation stands at EUR 612.08 million.

VULSORB Reaches Commercial Production

At the heart of Vulcan's process technology sits VULSORB, a proprietary aluminate material designed to selectively extract lithium from hot deep geothermal brine. The adsorbent was developed across pilot and optimisation facilities with a clear strategic aim: eliminating any reliance on Chinese adsorption technology. Before being cleared for deployment, the material underwent numerous operating cycles at industrial demonstration scale.

Manufacturing now runs in partnership with a local tolling operator, and commercial output of VULSORB is underway in Germany. The material is earmarked for the first fill of the extraction columns at Lionheart, with a parallel role in charging the A-DLE columns ahead of the wider system's commissioning. The planned facility pairs geothermal power generation with direct lithium extraction, targeting battery-grade material produced inside Europe and tailored to the needs of domestic industry.

Permits in Hand, Field Development on Schedule

A key milestone in the resource build-out came with the granting of Lionheart's second lithium production licence by the mining authority of Rhineland-Palatinate. The permit covers the geothermal production field in Landau and remains valid until 9 September 2032. According to the company, both construction work and field development are tracking toward the 2028 production target.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

That target envisages annual output of up to 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide at the site — enough, on paper, to supply the batteries of roughly 500,000 electric vehicles. Commercial production is officially slated to begin in 2028, with the second half of that year named as the starting window.

Boardroom Change and a Fresh Study

Leadership at the top has shifted. Dr. Francis Wedin stepped down from Vulcan Energy's board on 11 September, though he remains closely tied to the company as a major shareholder. A mandatory disclosure showed direct holdings of more than 15 million shares and 40,600 performance rights, supplemented by further stakes held through Magni Associates Pty Ltd. On the same date, The Goldman Sachs Group touched a reporting threshold in instruments linked to the company.

Management is simultaneously widening its view of future expansion. At an investor information event, chief executive Cris Moreno is presenting the results of the preliminary feasibility study for the Ludwig project, setting out additional development paths for the business.

Quarterly Report Eyed for Budget and Timeline Clarity

Attention now turns to the upcoming quarterly update, scheduled for release in October, which market participants expect to deliver a detailed picture of the construction schedule and the current budget framework. Until then, the broader environment for mining projects remains difficult, with investor reticence in the lithium sector weighing on valuations. How reliably the development timeline in the Upper Rhine Valley can be met — and how the next expansion phases will be financed — remain the decisive questions for shareholders on the road to commercial production.
