Vulcan Energy is discovering that building a European lithium business and getting the stock market to cheer about it are two very different undertakings. On the operational side, the company keeps ticking off milestones. On the trading floor, the shares keep drifting.

The latest session brought a 5.2% decline to EUR 0.9600, a move that left market watchers hunting for a company-specific trigger and coming up empty. No fresh bad news, no downgrade, no project setback — just the persistent reluctance that has come to define how investors treat a business whose full-scale payoff sits years down the road.

That reluctance has a sector-wide dimension. A day earlier, the stock had already shed 3.1% to close at EUR 1.01 as doubts over future lithium prices and broader demand weighed on sentiment. The caution wasn't confined to Vulcan: peer Elevra Lithium lost 2.4% over the same session, according to media reports. When even general market skepticism is enough to spark selling in battery-metal names, the bar for company-specific good news rises considerably.

VULSORB Output Begins, but Lionheart's Real Test Waits Until 2028

None of that has slowed work at the company's facilities. Roughly two weeks ago, Vulcan Energy announced the start of commercial production of VULSORB, its proprietary adsorbent, in Germany. The first batches are earmarked for the extraction columns at the Lionheart project. This preliminary production run is scheduled to continue for 18 to 24 months, ahead of the planned commissioning in the second half of 2028.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

For the company, the milestone is a tangible technical step toward extracting lithium from geothermal brine. It also serves a strategic purpose: manufacturing a key input in-house is meant to secure essential components for later production, with the orderly build-out of extraction capacity seen as the bridge from development phase to actual output. Investors, though, can't help staring at the calendar. A target date in the second half of 2028 demands patience that has grown scarce in financial markets, and large-scale projects of this kind carry operational risks — delays or technical hurdles — that shareholders are pricing in carefully.

Goldman Adds Exposure as a Founder Trims His Stake

Ownership registers have been shifting alongside the plant-floor progress. The Goldman Sachs Group disclosed on September 24 that its total position in Vulcan Energy Resources had risen to 5.20%, up from 5.02%. The voting-rights notification broke that down into a direct share of 0.11% and 5.08% held through financial instruments.

At the other end of the spectrum, a separate filing showed Francis Wedin cutting his voting stake in Vulcan Energy Resources from 4% to 1.98%, equivalent to 9,468,285 voting rights. Moves by founders and executives tend to draw close attention, with investors reading them as signals about the commitment of key figures — even when the underlying reasons can be varied. When a founder halves his holding while a major bank builds exposure through derivatives, market participants sit up and take notice.

The tension running through Vulcan Energy is the one that defines capital-intensive future projects everywhere. Operational wins are necessary, but they don't automatically soothe impatient shareholders. Proving that European lithium can be extracted economically is happening step by step — and the market wants hard evidence, not distant promises.
