Vulcan Energy's Boardroom Reinforcements and Insider Confidence Amid a Bruised Share Price
Published on 09/02/2026 at 02:42 | Editorial boerse-global.deA quiet insider purchase and a high-profile board appointment have handed Vulcan Energy investors two distinct signals in the space of a week, even as the lithium developer's shares continue to trade well below their yearly peak.
Director Cristobal Moreno acquired 7,000 fully paid ordinary shares in the company on 10 August at US$2.91 apiece. Following the transaction, his family account holds 134,710 shares alongside 887,287 performance rights, with a further 7,000 shares now registered directly in his own name. Market participants typically read such purchases by senior leadership as a vote of confidence, particularly when executed during calmer trading stretches.
The timing is notable: the stock sits far removed from its 2024 highs, leaving investors to weigh operational milestones against a persistently soft share price.
A Board Strengthened for the Next Phase
Just days before Moreno's purchase, Vulcan Energy unveiled a significant governance addition. Amanda Lacaze joined as an independent non-executive director on 17 August, also taking a seat on the audit, risk and ESG committee. Lacaze, who holds 39,350 fully paid ordinary shares in the company, brings rare-earth sector pedigree from her time leading Lynas Rare Earths and currently chairs the Minerals Council of Australia. That blend of operational mining experience and policy-level connections is intended to bolster the board's heft on governance matters, the company said.
The appointment lands as Vulcan Energy steps up its investor communications. An updated corporate presentation released in early August positions the firm as a future lithium producer for the battery industry, built around a fully integrated European supply chain anchored on direct lithium extraction technology.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?
Construction Progress at Lionheart
On the operational front, earthworks and high-voltage line installation at the German-French border site for Project Lionheart remain on schedule for completion by the third quarter of 2026. Foundation work is meanwhile advancing in Landau, with initial earthworks underway at the planned lithium chemicals plant site in Frankfurt.
These construction milestones matter because they mark the shift from planning into delivery for the company's central project — a transition that will heavily influence how the market values the business going forward.
A Share Price Still Searching for a Floor
The equity picture remains strained. The stock closed at €1.66 on Tuesday, roughly 60 percent below its 52-week high of €4.15 set in mid-October last year. Year-to-date, the shares have shed 35 percent, translating to a market capitalisation of around €802 million. On the most recent trading day, the shares changed hands at €1.67, down 2.3 percent from Monday's close of €1.71.
The recent institutional backdrop adds further texture. Citigroup entities had built a 5.05 percent stake in mid-July before trimming their position back below the disclosure threshold in early August — a move that has since been followed by a roughly 1.9 percent shift in the share price. BNP Paribas has also reduced its holding over the past three weeks, with the stock moving around 8.4 percent since that disclosure. Both moves are modest in the context of the year's broader decline.
What Investors Are Watching Next
Attention now turns to the phase-2 pre-feasibility study for the Ludwigshafen site, expected in September. The study is anticipated to show meaningful reductions in capital expenditure requirements — a factor that could prove significant for the project's ongoing financing.
For shareholders, the picture is decidedly two-sided: a historically weak year for the stock on one hand, and on the other, tangible construction progress at Lionheart alongside insider buying that at least signals confidence at the leadership level. Whether that translates into a durable turnaround will depend largely on whether the build-out hits its targeted third-quarter completion window.
