Volkswagen's preference shares shed 2.5% on Friday, closing at €69.84 as a broad selloff swept European equities. Reuters tied the market-wide retreat to mounting unease over AI stocks rather than to anything specific from Wolfsburg — a useful distinction, given how much company news had already landed during the week.

That news included a €1.95 billion capital raise. On Thursday the group placed two subordinated green hybrid bonds, according to Bloomberg. The same day, Bernstein Research resumed coverage of Volkswagen with a "Market-Perform" rating and an €80 price target. Analyst Harry Martin pointed to the sweeping restructuring effort and to investments in products and local manufacturing as the pillars of the case. The reinstated rating stops short of a buy recommendation, and it arrived one day before the market's latest slide.

Two Houses, Two Haircuts

Monday brought a pair of target cuts. Deutsche Bank Research trimmed its price target to €100 from €105 while keeping its buy rating, according to media reports. Topics raised in a conversation with finance chief Arno Antlitz included the restructuring, cost reduction in Germany and the situation in China. JPMorgan, also on Monday, lowered its target to €85 from €110 and maintained its neutral stance. Both brokerages stuck with their existing recommendations even as their price objectives came down.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Volkswagen?

The downgraded targets sit against a bruising third quarter. Volkswagen reported a net loss after tax of €5.82 billion for Q3 2026 roughly two weeks ago, with an operating loss of €5.86 billion.

Margin Squeeze in the Core Brand Group

At the brand level, the picture reported on 30 October was one of thinning returns. The Brand Group Core posted operating profit of €4.33 billion for the first nine months of 2026, down from €4.72 billion a year earlier. Its operating return on sales slipped to 4.1% from 4.4%, and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand stood at just 1.3%. The company also disclosed that development work on the future ID. Golf had been temporarily suspended.

Turkey in Play, Georgia Under Review

Manufacturing footprint decisions are moving in parallel. Volkswagen Group and Do?u? Otomotiv signed a letter of intent on 30 October to explore building Volkswagen passenger cars in Turkey. Across the Atlantic, Audi is weighing an expansion of its planned plant in Georgia, Reuters reported Thursday, citing published documents. A second phase could involve $3 billion of investment and 3,000 jobs.

Logistics offered one quieter item: on 28 October Volkswagen announced the completion of a port project in Emden, where it spent more than two years testing automated vehicle movements alongside Deutsche Telekom, Unikie and BIBA.
