Voestalpine Signs Industry Plea on Carbon Costs as Shares Slip 3% in Tech-Led Retreat
Published on 11/07/2026 at 18:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deVoestalpine has added its name to an industry-wide warning over the EU emissions trading system, joining more than 100 European companies in urging Brussels to revise planned reforms that they say could drive up costs and trigger further plant closures. Reuters reported the appeal on Thursday, with the steelmaker among the signatories calling for changes to the proposals to avert additional shutdowns.
The lobbying push came in the same week that Voestalpine's stock ran into broader market turbulence. The shares dropped 3.0% and closed at EUR 40.06, with the decline attributed to the dramatic losses suffered the previous day on the US tech-focused Nasdaq, which weighed on European equity markets. In Vienna, Voestalpine numbered among the ATX constituents in the red alongside Lenzing and Verbund, with dpa-AFX also pointing to weak leads from the US and Asia and a selloff in technology and AI stocks. The move was therefore tied to the wider market backdrop rather than to company-specific news.
Deutsche Bank Reaffirms Buy Rating
On the analyst front, Deutsche Bank confirmed its buy recommendation for Voestalpine on 27 October, keeping a price target of EUR 63.00. The note was a reiteration of the existing rating rather than an upgrade.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Voestalpine?
Sentiment in the steel sector had already taken a hit a day earlier, on 28 October, when Jefferies analyst Cole Hathorn described SSAB's comments on fourth-quarter pricing in the US market as disappointing. Voestalpine was among the stocks giving ground at the time, with the trigger coming from another steelmaker's guidance rather than from its own disclosures.
CEO Floats Building Abroad
Separately, chief executive Herbert Eibensteiner told a student newspaper, as reported by Die Presse, that he would not build a new plant in Austria. He said he would instead pick a location with cheaper energy prices and a lower cost base. The remark addressed a hypothetical decision on a new facility rather than any concrete project.
Apprenticeship Drive and Results Ahead
On the operational side, Voestalpine said 380 young skilled workers from Austria, Germany and Switzerland gathered in Linz on Thursday for the group's apprentice day. The company took on 311 new apprentices at its Austrian sites at the start of the new training year. Worldwide, it trains roughly 1,500 young people across 30 apprenticeship trades, according to its own figures.
Investors now have 11 November circled, when Voestalpine will publish results for the second quarter and the first half of fiscal 2026/27. The financial calendar lists the date as the release for both the quarterly and half-year figures.
