Vanguard's All-World ETF Stays Above 50-Day Line as September Haul Tops Europe

LSEG Lipper and ETFGI both rank Vanguard's All-World ETF first in European September inflows, as AI earnings loom and the fund holds above its 50-day average.

The Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF remains the most sought-after exchange-traded fund in Europe, and September's flow data underline the point. Two independent tallies of the same month point in the same direction, even though they measure different things.

LSEG Lipper calculated net inflows of €2.7 billion into the product in September, enough to rank it first among all European ETFs. The survey tracks the fund at product level and does not break the figure down by share class. ETFGI, meanwhile, reported $3.07 billion of September inflows into the London Stock Exchange-listed line of the same fund — again the highest single reading among European ETFs. That number likewise does not refer directly to the accumulating share class with ISIN IE00BK5BQT80, but to a separate listing of the same portfolio.

A split tape for a global fund

The demand arrived against a divided market backdrop. US benchmarks staged a partial rebound on Monday as investors picked through beaten-down AI names ahead of key quarterly results, with softer oil prices and falling bond yields lending support, according to Reuters. Europe told a different story: political and fiscal uncertainty surrounding France pushed the region's indices down by more than one percent, AP reported.

Because the fund holds both US and European equities, those opposing forces work on its value at the same time — one pulling up, the other down — which has a dampening effect on overall volatility.

The wider picture has been unsettled. A technology-driven selloff spread across global markets from mid-October after investors reassessed their bets on data centres and artificial intelligence in the face of high and rising interest rates, Reuters reported. Doubts about the cost and debt financing of AI infrastructure weighed on Asian equities, and Friday brought steep losses in semiconductor and tech shares that handed the S&P 500 its largest weekly decline since June, according to Reuters. A hotter-than-expected US inflation reading for September — 3.7 percent year on year — had already sharpened fears of sustained rate pressure, AP reported.

Not every signal was negative. Reuters flagged stronger-than-expected Chinese economic growth in the third quarter as a positive for global growth sentiment, while declining oil prices propped up bonds and US equity futures — factors that slightly rebalance the risk-reward picture for a broadly diversified world equity fund.

Price holds its ground

On Monday the ETF closed at €170.20, up 0.6 percent on the day, and it currently trades at €169.68 — 0.5 percent above its 50-day average of €168.84, a sign that the fund has not yet abandoned its medium-term uptrend despite the recent market turbulence. Its RSI of 49.2 signals neither an overbought nor an oversold position.

The broad spread across global equity markets is likely part of the appeal in volatile phases, when investors favour diversification over single bets. The two independently compiled datasets from LSEG Lipper and ETFGI — different in scope, product level versus individual exchange listing — paint a consistent picture of a fund that keeps drawing money regardless of short-term swings in technology stocks.

Earnings season as the next test

Upcoming results from large AI-linked companies are seen by Reuters as the immediate test of the sector's investment case. US technology stocks carry heavy weight in the Vanguard FTSE All-World ETF, so those reports are likely to set the direction for the fund in the coming days. Investors will be watching above all whether heavy spending on AI infrastructure is already translating into demonstrable returns — or whether financing costs are starting to weigh on the growth story.

For investors pursuing a passive, globally diversified approach, September's flows confirm the fund's continuing role as a preferred core holding.
