Fresh doubts over how the artificial-intelligence build-out will be financed rippled through global equity markets at the start of the week, leaving the Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation (ISIN IE00BK5BQT80) nursing a modest weekly shortfall even as it edged higher on the day.

The fund changed hands at EUR 170.16 on Monday, up 0.5% from the opening bell and ahead of Friday's EUR 169.24 close. That advance came despite a broadly weaker session across Asia, where chip and technology names retreated after investors once again questioned the scale of borrowing required by AI-focused companies, Reuters reported.

Record high still out of reach

Over the past week the ETF has shed 2.0%, and it now sits 2.2% below its all-time peak of EUR 174.00, set on 7 October. The pullback traces back to a selloff in semiconductor and tech-hardware shares that hit Wall Street at the end of last week, with the Nasdaq closing Friday down 2.1%. Micron Technology fell 5.6% and Intel dropped 5.8%.

The pressure had been building for days. US producer prices in September posted their steepest rise in four and a half years, a reading that sharpened inflation worries and weighed on growth stocks. The MSCI World index had already slipped 0.19% on Thursday, according to Reuters, and FTSE Russell data showed the FTSE All-World index down 0.3% on Friday.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF USD Accumulation?

Earnings season becomes the proving ground

Attention now swings to a heavy slate of corporate results. Meta, Lam Research, Texas Instruments and Tesla are all due to report in the coming week, and their numbers are being treated as a referendum on whether the vast sums poured into AI infrastructure are generating returns that justify the outlay.

Not every signal was negative. China's economy expanded 4.5% in the third quarter, slightly beating forecasts, while softer oil prices and lower US Treasury yields propped up US equity futures and cushioned losses across Asia. For a global index spanning thousands of holdings, the crosscurrents cut both ways: tech heavyweights drag, while macro and rate factors lend support.

Investors keep buying through the noise

Money has continued to flow into the product regardless of the market jitters. ETFGI figures cited by Finect show the fund took in USD 3.067 billion in net inflows during September — more than any other European ETF that month. LSEG Lipper put the figure at EUR 2.7 billion over the same period and likewise ranked it Europe's best-selling ETF.

At the firm level, Vanguard reported USD 7.5 billion of net inflows across its entire UCITS ETF range in September, with the global equity category leading by geographic exposure at USD 12.1 billion — a sign that investors are sticking with broad international diversification even as turbulence rocks individual sectors.

On a 30-day view the ETF remains 1.1% higher, and it is up 17% year to date, underscoring how the recent stumble has yet to break the medium-term uptrend. The fund's spread across thousands of stocks softens the blow from any single industry shock, though its structural tilt toward US technology names keeps it exposed to the very debate now dominating markets. Whether the coming earnings reports restore confidence or deepen the unease will shape the index's next move.
