The arithmetic of index investing has a new poster child. Vanguard has trimmed the ongoing charges on its FTSE All-World UCITS ETF to 0.14 percent, the second reduction inside twelve months, and the fund's asset base has responded with the kind of momentum that rivals tend to study rather than dismiss.

The fee cut, which took effect in late July, brings the total cost reduction to more than a third within a year — the fund previously charged 0.19 percent after dropping from 0.22 percent in October. For the hedged share class, the expense ratio fell in tandem from 0.22 percent to 0.17 percent. Vanguard estimates the latest move saves investors roughly $37 million annually.

Cash keeps compounding

The pricing strategy is landing in fertile soil. The fund, listed under ISIN IE00BK5BQT80, now holds $76.8 billion in assets under management, with net inflows exceeding $16 billion since the start of the year. That makes it the largest FTSE All-World ETF in Europe and, by Vanguard's own assessment, the fastest-growing globally invested index fund for European investors.

Market performance has done little to interrupt the flow. The ETF trades at €167.88, just 1.4 percent below its 52-week high of €170.24 reached on August 13. Year-to-date gains stand at 15 percent, stretching to 23 percent on a twelve-month view, while the 8.8 percent premium to the 200-day moving average points to a firmly intact uptrend.

The fee discipline extends beyond this single product. Across Vanguard's entire European equity and bond ETF range, the average asset-weighted cost now sits at 0.11 percent — a level few competitors can match.

A family of complements

The cost cuts arrived alongside a product expansion. Just over a week ago, Vanguard listed three new funds on the London Stock Exchange, Deutsche Börse, Euronext Amsterdam, Borsa Italiana and the SIX Swiss Exchange: the FTSE Global All-Cap UCITS ETF, the FTSE Global Small-Cap UCITS ETF and the FTSE All-World ex-US UCITS ETF.

The All-Cap fund, which bundles large, mid and small companies across developed and emerging markets in a single vehicle, carries a total expense ratio of 0.07 percent. The Small-Cap offering, focused on smaller companies worldwide, charges 0.22 percent. Both are available in accumulating and distributing versions, as is the ex-US fund.

The strategic logic is straightforward. The flagship All-World ETF already covers large and mid caps across developed and emerging markets; the newcomers add small-cap exposure and regional fine-tuning without disturbing the established core product. Investors who want to tilt toward smaller companies or exclude the US from their allocation now have dedicated building blocks, while the flagship continues to serve as the broadly diversified anchor.

For existing holders of the accumulating USD share class, nothing changes in the fund's positioning — the expansion extends the modular approach rather than cannibalising the original. The share price has barely moved since the announcement, remaining close to its record level.

The combination of falling costs, sustained inflows and a wider product shelf reinforces the fund's status as the default global equity holding for European investors — a position now backed by both price and breadth.
