The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has called for an urgent investigation into an odourless engine oil that it claims could mask dangerous cabin air contamination on commercial flights. The call for an inquiry comes as Airbus faces lawsuits from flight attendants who claim to have suffered health damage from contaminated cabin air. One prominent case involves flight attendant Tamar Ferrel, who filed a $30 million lawsuit following an incident on January 14, 2024.
The aviation industry has seen several high-profile diversions linked to odours and oil systems in recent days. On August 30, an Olympic Air ATR 42-600 en route from Rhodes to Karpathos was forced to return to Diagoras Airport shortly after takeoff due to a suspected oil system malfunction.
On the same day, an American Airlines flight travelling from Rome to Philadelphia diverted to Dublin after six of the nine flight attendants on board fell ill. While the airline initially attributed the incident to an oven malfunction, the crew reported a mysterious odour similar to those documented in earlier incidents during June and November.
Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies
The ITF's demand for a probe coincides with a period of heightened engine safety oversight. GE Aerospace recently expanded its borescope inspection requirements following the investigation into a 2023 engine shutdown.
That incident, involving an Air India Boeing 787-8 on August 4, 2023, was caused by locking lugs that had been incorrectly installed in 2018. To address the issue, GE Aerospace issued Service Bulletin SB 72-0543 on December 21, 2023, mandating more rigorous checks.
