UniCredit will report third-quarter and nine-month figures for 2026 on 9 November, with a webcast presentation starting at 10:00 CET. Ahead of that release, the Milan-based lender has confirmed an unchanged regulatory capital buffer, wrapped up two internal mergers and secured a warmer reception from Commerzbank's chief executive on a possible combination.

Capital floor fixed through 2027

The European Central Bank's supervisory review left UniCredit's additional Pillar 2 capital requirement at 200 basis points, the bank said on 27 October. From 1 January 2027, the consolidated minimum for common equity tier 1 capital will be 10.21%, with the overall tier 1 threshold at 12.09% and the total capital ratio at 14.59%.

UniCredit stressed that it sits comfortably above the supervisory requirements specific to it. The cushion looks ample: at 30 June the CET1 ratio stood at 14.26%, well clear of the new floor.

Insurance arm consolidated as legal mergers close

The group also finished folding its Italian life insurance operations into a single entity, merging UniCredit Vita Assicurazioni into UniCredit Life Insurance. The combined insurer holds reserves of EUR 46 billion and booked EUR 9 billion in premiums for 2025.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Unicredit?

A second in-house merger took effect on 1 November, when UniCredit SA/NV was absorbed by UniCredit S.p.A. The deed of merger was registered on 29 October, according to the bank.

Commerzbank chief sees room for value

Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp said on Thursday that a merger with UniCredit could create value, pointing to concrete levers on both costs and revenues, according to media reports. Reuters likewise reported a more positive tone from Commerzbank toward a potential combination.

The comments follow UniCredit's pledge on 30 October to throw stronger support behind German corporate clients through a proposed future combination of HVB and Commerzbank — a commitment that explicitly covers small and medium-sized enterprises. Reuters said the move was a response to concerns about UniCredit's push to acquire Commerzbank.

India link-up and a boardroom transition

Elsewhere, UniCredit and ICICI Bank signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to support cross-border business between Europe and India. The agreement spans corporate and retail banking, foreign exchange, and working capital, trade and supply chain finance.

On the personnel front, supervisory board chairman Pier Carlo Padoan announced on 28 October that he will step down at the end of his term for personal reasons. He will work alongside Jeffrey Hedberg, head of the nomination committee, to find a successor. The board's mandate runs until early 2027.
