Ubtech Robotics: Interim Results Land as Reuters Report Casts a Shadow Over Humanoid Ambitions

Ubtech's interim results show strong order momentum but face scrutiny as Reuters reveals humanoid robots operate at 20% human speed.

Ubtech Robotics' board convened today to sign off on the half-year figures for the period through June 2026, a routine procedural step that carries unusual weight this time around. The agenda, filed with the Hong Kong exchange on 18 August, centred on approving the interim accounts — but the numbers landing on directors' desks are being measured against a far more demanding yardstick than in previous cycles.

The shares responded with a 4.1 percent advance to €9.60 on the day, adding to a 5.3 percent gain recorded after last Wednesday's shareholder meeting. Yet the bounce sits awkwardly against a broader trend that has seen the stock shed 36 percent since the start of the year, leaving it within 8.4 percent of the 52-week low of €8.50 touched in late July.

A Reality Check From the Training Floor

The timing of the results release coincides with uncomfortable reading from Reuters, whose Thursday investigation into China's humanoid sector paints a picture of an industry racing ahead of its own technical capabilities. The agency found that Chinese humanoid robots currently operate at roughly 20 percent of human working speed. At a training centre in Liuzhou, more than 100 robots require an average of 300 attempts for a newcomer to master a single movement — experienced systems still need 50 tries.

The bottleneck, according to the report, lies partly in a shortage of training material: an estimated 500,000 to 100 million hours of movement data will be needed before the systems become genuinely practical. Ubtech surfaces in the Reuters account with a specific figure — an $18 million tender — underscoring how the company is both a beneficiary of and a participant in this data-hungry race.

Government funding is pouring in regardless. Reuters puts Chinese state spending for the first half at $230 million, up from $62 million in the equivalent period a year earlier, with China accounting for 95 percent of the roughly 20,000 humanoid units delivered worldwide. The gap between that financial firepower and the technology's actual readiness is the central tension investors must now weigh.

Orders Versus Deliveries

Against that backdrop, the interim figures offer the first hard evidence on whether Ubtech's commercial momentum can outrun the technical constraints. The company's consumer robot line, the UWORLD U1, unveiled at a Shenzhen launch event in late June in Lite, Pro and Ultra variants priced between 119,800 and 990,000 yuan, had already accumulated more than 13,361 orders at the time of presentation. Those bookings are expected to leave visible traces in today's half-year numbers, even though actual deliveries of the series are not slated to begin until later in the year.

The humanoid segment has been the growth engine: 2025 revenue reached 821 million yuan, a more than 22-fold increase year on year, representing 41.1 percent of total turnover, with 1,079 units shipped. The trajectory from niche player to volume supplier is unmistakable — even if the Reuters findings suggest the underlying systems have yet to match that pace.

Industrial Ambitions Beyond the Consumer Market

Ubtech is also broadening its industrial footprint. The wheeled Cruzr Y1, equipped with omnidirectional wheels, two arms and roughly four hours of battery life for factory operations, targets precisely the kind of workplace deployment where the Reuters report suggests the technology still has ground to make up. A strategic cooperation agreement with Hitachi (China) Ltd, signed in May, signals that the company's technology is finding application beyond the consumer arena, a factor investors are likely to factor into their reading of today's numbers.

The company also adjusted its capital structure ahead of the results, raising its registered capital to 440 million yuan in mid-August, an increase of around 5 percent — a move that often points to ongoing investment plans or balance-sheet strengthening ahead of operational disclosures.

A Two-Sided Message for Investors

The share price continues to trade below its short-term trendline, currently sitting roughly 7.3 percent under its 50-day average, with the primary article noting a gap of around 2.9 percent below the €9.89 mean. The discrepancy between the two readings reflects the stock's volatility around the release.

Ubtech is also using this week to showcase its embodied AI technology at the MedTech World Asia 2026 conference in Hong Kong, which runs from Tuesday through today, bringing practical applications to an audience of investors and clinicians.

The interim results now serve as the first substantive checkpoint for the promises management has been making — from the U1 order book to the Hitachi partnership. The central question for investors is how much of that pre-order momentum has already translated into revenue and margin, and whether the gap between the marketing narrative and the Reuters-documented reality of the technology's capabilities will narrow or widen in the quarters ahead.
