Intel's rival EMIB-T technology has reached a yield of roughly 90 percent and costs about half as much as CoWoS—a compelling pitch that TSMC appears to take seriously, even though Intel's substrate yield still lags at only around 50 percent. The 2-nanometer production line at Fab 20 is set to expand from 20,000 to 100,000 wafers per month by the end of 2026, while TSMC has pulled forward its target for 3-nanometer output of 180,000 wafers monthly to before the fourth quarter of 2026. The 2-nanometer node contributed 3 percent of revenue in the third quarter of 2026 and has logged four times as many tape-outs as the 3-nanometer process did at a comparable stage. The company has sped up construction of its first 1.4-nanometer fab in Taichung, with completion slated for the first half of 2027 and mass production targeted for mid-2028. Samsung isn't expected to reach comparable nodes until 2029, potentially giving TSMC a full-year lead on the most profitable next-generation orders. A telling technical detail: TSMC already achieves 90 percent yield on 256-Mbit SRAM for the A14 process at 1.4 nanometers—a maturity level competitors haven't matched.

Success Creates Its Own Problems

The demand is so intense that even TSMC's biggest customers are hedging their bets. Apple has held initial talks with Intel about using it as a second source, and Google is negotiating with Samsung over memory components for its "Icefish" processor. But for the core 1.4-nanometer components, both customers have no realistic alternative to TSMC. That's not erosion of market share—it's the opposite. The order books are overflowing.

TSMC's Japanese operations are also turning a corner. The Kumamoto plant (JASM) posted its first profit in the first quarter of 2026, around $29 million, after a loss the previous quarter. Yet The Motley Fool frames the correction as a buying opportunity: TSMC holds a 73 percent share of the foundry market, per Counterpoint Research, and trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 28.

Analyst targets vary widely. Barclays is among the more bullish houses with a price target of $650, while Susquehanna sees the stock at $600. The broader consensus sits at $496.25. Meanwhile, some institutional funds have cut their TSMC positions sharply while others have built new ones—evidence that conviction about the AI cycle's durability is far from unanimous.

The consensus price target among analysts covering the stock stands at €468.25, implying roughly 33 percent upside from current levels. A quarterly dividend of $1.1136 per share is expected for September 2026.

What looks like a warning sign on the surface may actually be the opposite. TSMC's capacity crunch isn't a symptom of weakness—it's proof that the company's technological lead is widening, not narrowing.
