TSMC's Packaging Roadmap Takes Centre Stage After Nvidia-Fuelled Rally

TSMC shares climbed 7.3% yesterday, lifted by Reuters reports that the chipmaker is weighing advanced memory production at Nvidia's request. The gain makes for a splashy headline, but the more substantive story for investors sits one layer down: a packaging technology called CoPoS, where TSMC has already committed to a timeline of its own.

A pilot line with a two-year horizon

Reuters reported yesterday that TSMC is developing a panel-based packaging process known as Chip-on-Panel-on-Substrate, or CoPoS. CoWoS, by contrast, remains the company's flagship technology for packaging AI chips, according to the report. Back in April, TSMC said it had built a pilot line and expected production to begin in roughly two years.

That pairing — a second approach in development while CoWoS holds its central role — argues in TSMC's favour. A pilot line turns the development step into something tangible; the economic value, however, will be settled by the shift into volume manufacturing. Execution against the stated production target is the yardstick that matters.

This is why CoPoS carries more weight than the prospect of an additional memory project. With CoPoS, TSMC has itself named a completed development milestone and a production expectation. That justifies a more favourable reading of the opportunity, provided the company stays on the path it has announced.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TSMC?

Memory ambitions remain just that

The memory considerations form an interesting backdrop rather than a thesis. According to media reports, TSMC is weighing production of advanced memory, including 3D-DRAM, at Nvidia's request. Such an expansion would speak for the company — but only if the deliberations harden into a binding commitment. Investors would do well to anchor expectations to concrete corporate decisions.

The unglamorous side of the fab

There is a second thread running alongside the technology story, and it deserves equal attention. On 30 October, Reuters reported that TSMC had asked suppliers for motors free of rare earths for fab automation equipment, prompted by concerns over Chinese export controls.

The request points to a search for procurement alternatives. That would be an advantage for TSMC — assuming suitable substitutes actually become available. The test lies in the practical usability of such components.

Read together, the two strands sketch a single challenge: a convincing manufacturing strategy has to account for new processes and for the equipment needed to run them. CoPoS offers a production perspective; the supplier inquiry shows where else the company is looking for room to manoeuvre. A constructive view of TSMC rests on technological development and resilient procurement advancing in tandem.

What to watch next

A near-term marker arrives on 10 November at 13:30 Taipei time, when TSMC is scheduled to publish its October revenue figures. The timetable is subject to change. Two separate levels matter for the assessment: how the existing business is developing, and how progress on future technologies unfolds.

On balance, the verdict is cautiously positive. TSMC's CoPoS work provides a concrete technological anchor, provided the announced production ramp succeeds. The memory deliberations could complement the picture if they turn into a confirmed corporate decision. For now, the greater weight belongs to delivery on what TSMC has already announced itself.
