TSMC's August Revenue Jumps 53% as Chipmaker Builds 25 Fabs and Targets 110,000 Monthly 2nm Wafers

TSMC's August results landed with force: consolidated net revenue of NT$514.81 billion, a 53.3% surge year over year and a 10.1% gain over July. The record haul, disclosed Thursday in a filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange, reflects unrelenting demand for semiconductors powering artificial intelligence applications — a boom that shows no sign of cooling.
To keep pace, the contract chipmaking giant is racing to expand on multiple fronts at once. Cliff Hou, deputy co-COO, said Tuesday that TSMC is pushing ahead with construction of 25 wafer fabrication and advanced packaging facilities worldwide in 2026, with 13 of those projects located in its home market of Taiwan. Demand for AI chips continues to outstrip available supply, Hou noted, making the capacity buildout unavoidable.
The scale of the tooling required tells its own story. According to Bloomberg, projected demand for chip production equipment has climbed to nearly 1.9 times the estimates management issued in December — a near doubling in less than a year.
Arizona Commitment Swells to $265 Billion
TSMC's U.S. footprint is expanding just as aggressively. Reuters reported Monday that the company raised its Arizona investment by an additional $100 billion, bringing the total to $265 billion. The program now spans twelve fabrication plants across the United States, according to the Commerce Department.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TSMC?
On the technology front, the company is preparing a significant production push in its most advanced nodes. Supply chain reports from Taiwan indicate TSMC aims to lift 2-nanometer capacity to 110,000 wafers per month by mid-2026 — roughly 22% above the level anticipated for the end of 2025. Capacity for the 3nm process is also set to grow, with a 16% increase to 210,000 wafers monthly targeted for the same period.
Market circles are already circulating estimates for next year's capital budget: $60 billion to $64 billion for 2026, with as much as 80% earmarked for the most advanced manufacturing processes. TSMC has declined to comment officially on specific capacity targets, though the sheer scale of its fab investments points to a continued growth trajectory.
Apple, Nvidia Anchor the Customer Roster
The customer mix underscores TSMC's dominance at the high end. Apple is expected to build its upcoming A20 Pro chip for the iPhone 18 series on the new 2nm process. Nvidia, meanwhile, has grown dramatically in importance — Jensen Huang has said the U.S. graphics specialist is now TSMC's largest customer. Fujitsu is also betting on the Taiwanese foundry, with plans for its own 2nm-class AI chips in 2027, to be distributed in part through a partnership with Super Micro Computer.
Looking further out, the next technology generation may arrive ahead of schedule. Construction of Fab 25 in Taichung, intended for 1.4-nanometer production, could move faster than previously calculated. Initial pilot runs might begin as early as April 2027, with full volume production eyed for the second half of that year — roughly six months ahead of the market's original expectations.
Shares Slip Despite Operational Wins
The stock failed to draw strength from the upbeat operational news. Shares changed hands at EUR 362.50 on Monday, down 3.1%. The pullback does little to dent the longer-term picture: the equity has advanced 41% since the start of the year, putting the company's market capitalization at approximately EUR 1,936.46 billion.
Friday's close of EUR 374.00 had left the stock about 2.9% above its 50-day moving average of EUR 363.59. Analysts at The Motley Fool issued a forecast Tuesday calling for a 34% revenue increase in fiscal 2026, driven by global investment in AI infrastructure. With a worldwide foundry market share exceeding 70%, TSMC stands to benefit directly from escalating computing demands — and its August revenue of more than $16 billion, a monthly record, captures the industry's current momentum.
