Thyssenkrupp: A 17-Euro Target, a 27 October Spinoff Deadline, and the Earnings Test Still to Come

JPMorgan raised Thyssenkrupp's price target to €17 from €15 but kept Neutral, as tk accelis spin-off dates near and earnings hopes remain unproven.

Thyssenkrupp has handed investors two very different kinds of news this month, and conflating them would be a mistake. One is a calendar of legal and structural steps that can be tracked to the day. The other is a set of profit hopes that have yet to show up in a single set of results.

That distinction sits at the heart of JPMorgan's stance. On 15 October the bank lifted its price target on the stock from 15 to 17 euros, yet kept its rating at "Neutral." A higher valuation marker without an upgrade is more telling than the target move on its own: the house raised its arithmetic, not its conviction.

Analyst Dominic O'Kane offered little room for positive earnings surprises across European steelmakers heading into the quarterly reporting season. Possible steel price increases, he suggested, could lend support, and he expects profit acceleration in the fourth quarter and in 2027. The operative word there is "expected." Price hikes and faster earnings are arguments for a brighter outlook, not proof that returns have already improved. A price target may run ahead of reality; management still has to underwrite it with numbers.

Structure Has Dates; Earnings Have Only Hopes

The planned carve-out of tk accelis brings a firmer kind of clarity. Shareholders are to receive one tk accelis share for every 20 Thyssenkrupp shares they hold, with Thyssenkrupp retaining 51 percent. The separation of the remaining 49 percent is due to take effect on 27 October 2026 upon entry in the commercial register, and entitlement is in principle determined by the shareholding on that day. The first listing in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange is scheduled for 28 October 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Thyssenkrupp?

BaFin has already approved the securities prospectus, which gives the transaction a concrete regulatory footing — though a cleared document is not the same as a completed market debut. The next fixed date on the diary is the 2025/2026 annual report on 8 December.

Keeping 51 percent means this is a reshuffling rather than a clean break. The retained majority stake belongs in any economic reading of the deal just as much as the direct allocation to shareholders. A new ownership structure may make it easier to value individual holdings; it does not guarantee a rise in profit.

A 46% Run That Raises the Bar

The share price adds its own nuance. Thyssenkrupp is up 46% since the start of the year, so the hope for better business is not landing on a stock that has yet to move. If anything, that advance sharpens the question of whether the coming figures can support the optimism — not whether the valuation is stretched, but whether the results can carry the story.

Inovance Deal Opens a Door, Not an Order Book

The automotive division's cooperation with Inovance Automotive fits the same pattern. The memorandum of understanding covers steer-by-wire and is initially focused on China, with other international markets envisaged further out. Such an agreement creates possibilities, but it is not the same as a contract for the group as a whole, and it would be premature to read concrete additional revenue into it. Strategic intent deserves attention; in a valuation it should not carry the same weight as demonstrated business success.

Weighing it all up, a wait-and-see, critical posture seems right. Thyssenkrupp is executing structural steps and working on technology partnerships, which argues against a blanket negative verdict. It is not enough for a convincingly positive one either. The decisive evidence has to come from earnings, not from the number of change programmes underway.
