The Office Is Becoming a Meeting Place, Not a Place You Must Sit All Day

Workplace planners are rethinking what a desk is actually for. According to industry reports, the office is shifting away from a mandatory attendance site toward a venue for encounters — while the home office increasingly absorbs focused solo work. Innovation and personal exchange, the thinking goes, belong in the shared space.
That shift has practical consequences for how rooms get built. Specialists recommend multifunctional surfaces and modular room-within-a-room setups, and for hybrid meetings they treat speaker recognition, optimised lighting and acoustic modules as essential rather than optional.
Sitting Is the New Smoking — and the Numbers Back It Up
Personal ergonomics gets blunter treatment. Average users spend more than eight hours a day seated, which is why height-adjustable desks are recommended to let people alternate between sitting and standing and stimulate their metabolism. Suitable office chairs should come with lumbar support and adjustable armrests. On lighting, natural light is preferred, supplemented by desk lamps with adjustable colour temperature for the evening hours.
Ceiling Fixtures That Pretend to Be Skylights
Hardware makers are chasing the same goal from above. Govee has introduced the Sky Ceiling Light, designed as a smart skylight. The unit measures 52.5 cm across, connects directly to the ceiling supply line and, per the manufacturer, reaches brightness of up to 7,000 lumens.
A colour rendering index (CRI) of 95 and a colour temperature range of 1,000 to 10,000 Kelvin point to precise light quality. Technical certificates attest to flicker-free operation and low glare.
One distinguishing feature is the so-called Vitality Spectrum, which uses blue light at a wavelength of 478 nanometres. Control runs partly through an AI-based bot that generates lighting scenes from text or voice commands. The system is priced at 399 euros.
Details also emerged about the Govee COB Light Strip 2 Pro. It carries 1,334 LEDs per metre and uses LuminBlend+ technology. At 540 lumens per metre and roughly 45 watts of power draw, the strip is intended for accent lighting. It is Matter-compatible and sold in 2-metre lengths for 89.99 euros and 5-metre lengths for 179.99 euros.
For cable-free use, FULEN offers a smart LED wall lamp fitted with a 5,000 mAh battery that is said to run up to 10 hours at maximum brightness of 600 lumens. An integrated motion sensor picks up activity within a radius of up to 3.5 metres.
A Red Dot for a Pendant, and a Case for Wired Control
In lighting design, the Divi pendant system by Arkoslight — a design by Lars Tornøe — took the Red Dot Design Award 2026. A new product configurator is also available for planning complex lighting compositions.
Established luminaire makers are widening their ranges too. Knapstein, for instance, has added the height-adjustable TITZIA floor lamp, which offers Dynamic-white control across 1,800 to 3,000 Kelvin.
For professional installations, attention is turning to DMX technology (DMX512) in smart-home applications. The system transmits 512 control channels serially over a single line. Its key advantage over wireless standards such as Zigbee — which can show latencies of 50 to 300 milliseconds — is DMX's delay of under 3 milliseconds. That matters especially for complex RGBW control or moving light elements.
What Colour Does to a Room — and What Shading Does to a Building
The psychological effect of room colours has been examined in various medical settings. A study at Helios University Hospital Wuppertal found that patients and staff rated an intensive care unit redesigned in terms of colour and lighting markedly more positively. In forensic psychiatry, too, bright, warm atmospheres were associated with relaxation.
On home office design, references to Feng Shui principles hold that colour-optimised environments can raise concentration and productivity by roughly 15 to 20 percent. The recommended split is 70 to 80 percent neutral colours and 20 percent dynamic accent colours.
Alongside artificial lighting, summer heat protection plays a role. Experts point to the importance of UV-resistant privacy roller blinds, with systems using heat-reflective coating or fibreglass fabric recommended.
