The Day of Surgery: When Healing Actually Begins
Published on 09/09/2026 at 14:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deFor many patients facing joint replacement, the most critical therapy doesn't start weeks later in a rehabilitation clinic. It starts within hours of leaving the operating room.
The Sana Kliniken Niederlausitz, marking the Day of Physiotherapy, said patients are frequently mobilised on the very day of their operation. There is no rigid schedule, the hospital stressed — the intensity and sequencing of exercises are tailored to each individual's condition.
The same early-activation philosophy drives cardiac care. At the Sana-Herzzentrum Cottbus, mobilisation often begins while patients are still in intensive care. There, breathing exercises take priority, helping stabilise lung function after surgery and reducing the risk of complications.
A Team Sport, Not a Solo Act
Modern rehabilitation has moved well beyond the single therapist. The Sana Dreifaltigkeits-Krankenhaus in Cologne used the International Day of Physiotherapy to highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration shapes recovery. Its rehab centre brings together physiotherapists, sports therapists, occupational therapists and massage practitioners under one roof, covering both outpatient and inpatient care.
The service spectrum runs from prevention through to aftercare. Partnerships with social insurance carriers play a notable role — including the "RV Fit" programme run by the Deutsche Rentenversicherung, Germany's statutory pension insurance, which targets prevention and the preservation of workers' ability to earn a living.
The Perils of Do-It-Yourself Treatment
Patients increasingly turn to self-help before seeking professional care — often waiting until pain becomes unbearable. Physiotherapists at the Clinical Centre of Montenegro used the International Day of Physiotherapy to issue a blunt warning: unverified advice pulled from internet sources or AI systems such as ChatGPT can do more harm than good. Even traditional home remedies like cabbage wraps drew criticism.
The profession's scope is far broader than that of a masseur, the therapists noted. The core task is restoring impaired bodily functions. Without a proper diagnosis, misguided self-treatment risks delaying the healing process altogether.
When Lymphatic Drainage Crosses Into Cosmetics
Beyond medical therapy, wellness providers advertise a gentler variant: lymphatic drainage massage. According to the portal Treatwell, this treatment targets swelling, though its effects typically last only a few days.
The cosmetic version should not be mistaken for a medical procedure. It is not suitable for weight loss, detoxification or treating cellulite, the portal clarified. Sessions usually run between 30 and 60 minutes.
There are clear contraindications. Patients with acute infections, fever, thrombosis or heart and kidney conditions should avoid the treatment entirely. Those recovering from cosmetic surgery must wait until a doctor has explicitly given the go-ahead.
For those seeking relief from knee pain at home, simpler techniques may suffice. Physiotherapist Andy Sixtus demonstrated self-massage methods designed to ease discomfort and prevent joint problems during the Bavarian television programme "Wir in Bayern" on 13 September 2023. The accompanying video segments remain available in the broadcaster's media library until 22 September 2028.
