Adhesive manufacturer tesa is widening its use of artificial intelligence well beyond the pilot stage, embedding new systems in three distinct parts of its operations: human resources, supply chain management and energy management. The push, detailed in an industry report, is aimed at cutting administrative workloads, speeding up logistics decisions and delivering a measurable drop in operational energy consumption.

An Assistant That Answers the Awkward Questions

Staff-facing administration is the first target. Tesa has introduced an assistant called "Ask PIA," which sits inside Microsoft Teams and pulls answers from internal resources stored on SharePoint.

The tool handles the kind of queries that traditionally land on an HR or facilities desk: parental leave entitlements, the issuing and use of employee ID cards, and the mechanics of filing a holiday request. By serving up the relevant information automatically, tesa expects routine enquiries to be consolidated and administrative waiting times to shrink.

A Hierarchy of Agents Sorting Out the Supply Chain

Logistics gets a more layered treatment. Rather than a single AI tool, tesa has built a network of specialised units. A central software agent receives incoming requests and routes them onward to subordinate agents.

That arrangement covers both day-to-day and longer-range questions — demand forecasting, inventory management and logistics among them. Distributing tasks across the agent network lets tesa evaluate complex planning data drawn from different points along the value chain more quickly, feeding it into operational decisions.

Every 15 Minutes, a Fresh Verdict on How to Run the Plant

The third and most technically involved strand is the "Energy Intelligence Platform," which ties together long-term energy planning, electricity purchasing and the running of equipment.

Working from current data, the platform recalculates the most cost-effective and CO?-optimal operating mode for production facilities on a 15-minute cycle, then adjusts them automatically. That includes switching the company's own combined heat and power plants on and off dynamically, so the sites can respond to shifting load profiles and market prices.

Two hard targets sit behind the automation. Tesa intends to produce climate-neutrally by 2030 and to cut its operational energy costs by more than 10%. Linking energy procurement directly to manufacturing is, in the company's approach, a central building block for hitting both.
