Telekom's Fibre Engine Hits a Record as a €1bn Polish Bet Reshapes Its European Playbook
Published on 08/27/2026 at 02:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deThe German telecoms incumbent is quietly assembling a growth narrative that spans two continents, with a record-breaking month of fibre construction at home and a billion-euro acquisition in Poland now anchoring its European ambitions.
July proved to be a landmark month for Deutsche Telekom's fibre rollout, with the company connecting 273,000 new homes and businesses to its network — the most it has ever built in a single month. That brings the group's total to 13.9 million addressable premises, a milestone that underscores how the operator is accelerating the pace of its infrastructure build-out even as it juggles share buybacks and transatlantic strategic questions.
The record figure lands amid a flurry of corporate activity. Just three weeks earlier, the group had posted its second-quarter numbers, with revenue climbing 4.4 percent year-on-year to €29.93 billion. Adjusted earnings per share came in at €0.51, a dip from the €0.54 recorded in the same period a year earlier. The US business, T-Mobile US, provided the momentum, prompting management to lift its full-year guidance for free cash flow.
A €1bn Polish Push
On the acquisition front, T-Mobile Polska announced on 17 August that it would acquire fibre network operators Fiberhost and Inea from Macquarie Asset Management for roughly €1 billion. The deal is a clear signal of intent: Deutsche Telekom wants to deepen its footprint in Poland's growing fibre market, positioning the country as a key pillar of its European growth strategy alongside its stateside operations.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
The Polish move came the same week the buyback programme resumed in earnest. Between 17 and 21 August, the company repurchased 1,544,165 of its own shares at a weighted average price of approximately €29.10. The programme had formally kicked off on 10 August. Such repurchases trim the share count and typically lend support to the stock price — a gesture investors tend to read as management signalling confidence in the current valuation.
Market Snapshot
The share price has been trading in a narrow band of late. After closing at €29.00 on Tuesday, the stock was hovering around €29.01, essentially flat. Over the past 30 days, however, the shares have gained a solid 7.8 percent. They still sit roughly 16 percent below the 52-week high of €34.35 reached in late February.
One data point from the primary source shows the stock closing at €28.97 on the day of reporting, down 0.3 percent, while the secondary source cites a close of €29.00 on Tuesday with the stock at €29.01. Both reflect a similar picture of stability at current levels.
US Headwinds
Not everything across the Atlantic is running smoothly. Reports from Semafor, cited by Seeking Alpha, suggest that discussions over a deeper transaction between Deutsche Telekom and its US subsidiary have hit a snag, though details on the scope of the proposed deal remain scarce. T-Mobile US has also been trimming its workforce — cutting 4,671 roles in the first half of 2026 as part of restructuring efforts, and announcing 77 job cuts alongside store closures in Washington state. CEO Mike Sievert has pushed back on the threat posed by SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, dismissing concerns that it poses a serious challenge to traditional mobile operators. Bernstein Research, meanwhile, downgraded the US unit to "Neutral" in mid-August.
What's Next
Investors have two dates circled on the calendar. The "Digital X" conference in Cologne on 8 September will showcase the group's artificial intelligence initiatives, while the third-quarter interim report is due on 5 November. In the meantime, the buyback should continue to underpin the share price, and the fibre rollout — now running at record speed — gives the market a tangible metric to track. Whether the US transaction talks revive remains an open question, but the European growth engine is clearly firing on all cylinders.
