T-Mobile Slips as SpaceX Moves to Build a Rival Mobile Network

T-Mobile fell 8.7% to EUR 139.50 after SpaceX agreed to buy an 800 MHz low-band spectrum portfolio from Grain Management for about USD 8 billion.

Elon Musk's SpaceX has agreed to buy a nationwide low-band spectrum portfolio from Grain Management, a deal that threatens to turn a satellite partner into a direct competitor of the big US carriers — and investors wasted little time repricing T-Mobile US.

The stock fell 8.7% to EUR 139.50, extending a slide that had already seen it drop 6.4% to EUR 142.88 in pre-market trading, down from a EUR 152.72 close the previous day.

A spectrum flip with a twist

What gives the transaction its edge for T-Mobile is the identity of the seller. The Bonn-based group's US subsidiary had only transferred that same spectrum to Grain Management in August. Now it is set to change hands again, with SpaceX reportedly paying around USD 8 billion in cash for the portfolio.

The package covers up to 14 megahertz of paired low-band spectrum in the 800-megahertz range, capable of reaching nearly the entire US population. Low-band airwaves are prized for their ability to penetrate building walls, which is precisely the quality SpaceX needs to give Starlink Mobile indoor coverage across the country. The purchase still requires formal approval from the FCC.

Musk has publicly described the acquisition as the final piece of the puzzle needed to deliver a full mobile service. The FCC had already cleared the use of 15,000 second-generation satellites this week, opening the door to direct-to-smartphone connections. For incumbent network operators, that adds up to a potential mid-term rival aiming to bring cellular service straight to ordinary handsets.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying T-Mobile US?

Wall Street splits on the fallout

Analysts greeted the move with a mix of caution and skepticism. Scotiabank trimmed its price target on the Nasdaq-listed T-Mobile from USD 217 to USD 212 while keeping an "Outperform" rating, citing a higher probability of long-term market disruption. The firm was quick to add a caveat, though: network capacity in dense urban areas and the economics of a full terrestrial build-out remain unproven for SpaceX.

JPMorgan took a cooler view, calling the near-term risk to the roughly USD 240 billion US mobile market limited and expecting no material threat to operating performance within its forecast horizon. Morningstar raised its uncertainty rating but stopped short of predicting a direct assault on subscriber numbers, framing the development mainly as a lingering risk to how the sector is valued.

Industry analyst Tim Farrar pointed to the operational hurdles ahead, noting that the amount of spectrum acquired is modest and that reliable indoor coverage in cities would still require the construction of costly terrestrial transmission towers.

T-Mobile bets on its own playbook

T-Mobile is not standing still. At a Deutsche Telekom investor event, the carrier's technology chief John Saw laid out how automated network adjustments and artificial intelligence are being used to improve resilience and cut costs.

The company's own ties to SpaceX add another layer of complexity. T-Mobile currently works with Starlink on emergency and basic services through its T-Satellite program — a partnership that could gradually morph into a fight for the same mobile customers.

Concrete evidence of how the competitive landscape is affecting day-to-day operations will arrive on October 28, when T-Mobile reports third-quarter results. Until then, the debate over the FCC's review of the SpaceX deal and the true reach of its ambitions is likely to keep the shares in focus.
