Supervisory Board Members Put EUR 152,940 Behind Deutz Turnaround
Published on 10/17/2026 at 12:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deTwo supervisory board members at Deutz have bought shares worth a combined EUR 152,940, a signal of internal confidence that has landed just as sell-side analysts sharpen their views on the Cologne engine maker's pivot toward defense.
Dr. Rudolf Maier acquired stock worth EUR 99,540.00, according to mandatory disclosures, and Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter followed on October 8 with a purchase of EUR 53,400.00. The buying came early in the month, when the share price was still working off its recent softness.
The stock closed Friday at EUR 10.82, up 1.6% on the day, leaving it roughly 19% below its 52-week high. No company news accompanied that rebound, which points to a technical bounce after an overdone pullback. Even so, the equity is up 27% since the start of the year.
Berenberg Lifts Target on Defense Profile
The more consequential catalyst came on October 7, when Berenberg raised its price target on Deutz to EUR 16.50 from EUR 13.00 and kept its Buy rating. Analyst Lasse Stueben tied the move to the company's deeper push into the defense sector, arguing that the acquisition announced in July of Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) noticeably improves the group's margin profile.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?
That deal marks a strategic widening of what has traditionally been a cyclical business. Defense contracts tend to rest on long-term budgets and predictable revenue streams, which can blunt the group's exposure to downturns in industrial demand.
Bernstein Research takes a constructive view of the broader European capital goods backdrop. Analyst Alasdair Leslie kept an Outperform rating and a EUR 12.40 target on October 14, judging that the sector cycle remains at a comparatively early stage after roughly six quarters of upswing. A separate Bernstein note on Thursday, attributed to analyst Pal Skirta, reiterated the same Outperform rating and EUR 12.40 target, pointing to a leaner cost base and stating that Deutz is on track to meet its own full-year targets.
Cologne Cuts Underline Cost Pressure
Running alongside the expansion is a retooling of the legacy business. Reports about two weeks ago flagged plans to cut staff at the main Cologne plant, with a reduction of 130 to 200 positions by the end of 2028 under discussion. Small-engine manufacturing, where demand has been subdued, is said to be most affected. Deutz declined to comment on those reports.
Deutz at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Handelsblatt reported that as many as 400 jobs could go in the small-engine business, a figure the company also did not address. Either way, the thrust is the same: trimming capacity in lower-margin small engines to free up resources for more profitable operations.
November 5 Sets the Test
The next hard data point arrives on November 5, 2026, when Deutz publishes its quarterly statement for the first to third quarters and discusses the results on a conference call. That update will show whether cost discipline is taking hold and whether demand is steady enough to support the group's guidance — and whether earnings from the defense side are starting to offset the drag from the restructuring.
